Christmas presents from your job?

Commission check + possible christmas bonus + a raise
Only been with my company since June, but have been showing "great improvement"

Feels good to be a 19 year old on top of my shit.

During the "good" times, my firm used to send us Omaha Steaks and Fruit baskets from Harry & David, which was always fun to find rotting on your doorstep, if you've been out of town during the holiday season. They wised up and started letting you order it yourself, on-line after people complained. We also used to get a summer gift, usually 8-10 pints of Ben and Jerry's ice cream with assorted toppings and a nice, high-end ice cream scoop.

Now that the economy is in the toilet (although we have seen signs of recovery, as evidenced by my increasing workload), they've canceled our holiday party, no gifts, no bonus/raise this year unless you were promoted (first time in the 7 years I've worked here).

You take these perks (i.e., free lunch etc.) for granted when you have them, and when it goes away, you realize your cost base has increased 5-8% without a comparable increase in compensation, a declining retirement account, and a similar amount of work/responsibility and say to yourself, "FML, there's 35 more years of this? I need to marry rich."

Self-employed so nothing for me.

But a client of ours is currently going through the process of hiring us on as employees. They knew what we make annually and such as they wanted us to go through a formal hiring process. They then offer us a salary of practically half of what I make. I nearly laughed at the HR girl when she said the salary. I understand since I was self-employed I was making slightly more then I should be but not half of what I make either. We'll see what they come back with.

Really sad this year.. I lost sleep for over a week. November was a really rough month. We normally provide everyone with a bonus right after thanksgiving so they have enough time to buy presents and what not. We were forced to pull money out of our personal accounts to cover bonuses. And the bonuses were still 30% less than they were the year before. First time we didn't top the raise in bonus we gave the year before in over 10 years. It is really disappointing.

The worst part about it, these guys complained all last year that they should get a higher bonus, and this year they said the same damn thing. Do people not understand that there is over a 10% unemployment rate in NYC?? These guys should be happy to still have a job! It pissed me off that I pulled money out of my own personal account to make their holiday more special and they still complained!!! I turn away 5-10 CDL licensed drivers every day.. and these guys completely take it for granted.

If you got a bonus this year and it wasn't what you hoped it would be. Take it from someone that had to cut bonuses this year, enjoy the fact you have a job and can put food on the table.

In 25 years of loyal services to my company I never got anything. This year, they laid off 600 employees, no raise for the remaining employees and we got 5 unpaid days which is the equivalent to a reduction in salary of about 2%. In the mean time, the CEO got a bonus of CAD $2.8M and then he retired. One of the two VP was named the new CEO and the losing VP got a bonus of CAD $1M as a retention clause in his contract.
