What's under the felt?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered, the search returned no results.

What is under these felt covers that hang down under the front bumper. (see attached picture) Anything that's going to be expensive to fix if they get hit?

It looks horrible, why one earth did they put that there? Lines would have been much cleaner if it was just flat as opposed to that hanging lump of felt.

Helps control the airflow underneath the car while remaining pliable enough to withstand contact with the ground and cheap to replace if damaged.

Get a lip to cover it up.

On a side not would you first rather scrape the felt or scrape the bottom of the bumper? At least the felt gives you some type of buffer....

I'm always amazed with some of you guys who pay attention to stuff like that. Like that other guy who posted about a month ago a picture of the thermometer in the compartment right above this felt I'm not criticizing, I think it's good to be observant, nevertheless AMAZED.

We just like to know the ins and outs of everything. IMO you can never learn enough. A little slogan that I always liked from flying was "A good pilot is always learning"

If you live in a hilly area with steep driveways you will appreciate the felt. It's saved my bumper a couple of times already.

Simply put it reduces drag without reducing ground clearance.

Wasn't he the same guy who wondered why they would put a thermometer out front when the wind chill would cause the reading to be low? That was hilarious.

It's a functional front spoiler and part of the overall aerodynamics of the car. It's felt and under the cosmetics so that it's cheaper to replace when scratched. And because it's placed closer to the front wheels it doesn't extend as close to the ground when the car's at an angle as it would if it were at the tip of the front bumper.

Thanks guys. That's what I'm slightly scraping on my driveway. Nice to know there's not really anything under there.
