Interesting to see US enthusiasts embracing diesel in a country where 99.99% of cars are gas.

Over in France where 99.99% of cars are diesel, enthusiasts are always on the lookout for the rare gas engine.

Another case of grass is greener?

Interesting, cause here in Europe diesel engined car sales are down compared to gas engined cars.

First, let me thank appropriate people who actually made this happen : Thank you, U.S. Government, for forcefully pulling BMWNA's heads out of their anuses.

Second, this is VERY good news for all customers, more companies will have to play catch-up and more diesel choices will be available here.

This said, let me give you verbatim a part of text message my wife sent to me this morning after dropping our E92 for service: "Asked for a 1er and got an X1. God I hate automatic!" So, if you can't sell AT to my wife, go figure how many you will sell to enthusiasts. Yes, yes ... ask yourselves how many NON enthusiasts will purchase 320d ...

My other car is a Jetta TDI with MT and I don't understand what all the complaining is about. I wouldn't want it any other way - classic AT OR DSG. I also drove my friend's 318d MT (E90) couple of months ago when visiting home in Europe and I don't see any problem with that combo. Wouldn't want it any other way. Yes, the MT is completely different than on my 335i and yes, it is very obviously cheaper "feeling" but that doesn't mean it needs to be replaced with AT. Not for me, at least.

Finally, it was never 100% confirmed that MT will NOT be offered - maybe as some kind of no-cost option or pay-for option. I wouldn't hold my breath, though.

The F30 320d will sell extremely well, especially with the high residual values that diesels tend to have. Slot it a few grand under the 328i and they will fly off the shelf.

You hit the nail on the head. I can't wait to see Mercedes and Audi answer back. The market's finally heading the right direction (diesels instead of hybrids).

Mercedes already offers Bluetec in their R, E, ML, GL and even S-class vehicles. All they need is a C and/or B diesel and their line up will be complete.

BMW is the one playing catch up to MB.

However, I still think it is very good news that BMW is finally being serious about diesel engines for North America.

MT in high powered diesel (3L 6 Cyl) will not make much sense because there is lot of power in small band also it will cost a bomb to keep clutch healthy. So 320d/325d MT will be fun and market will embrace them.
But for 335d-MT combo I dont think even 3 pedal enthusiast will like it.
Just my thoughts based on my current ride and 11 yrs(off 14yrs total) of MT driving

All in all: Diesel MT is a no-go. The 6cyl are either not available or no fun to drive and the 4cyl have a crappy transmission (they're not too much fun to drive either).

I'd get the 8 Speed AT.
Engine itself is not ideal too.

Im sorry but ...in real world R6diesel + AT works best. Especially on things like X5.

I should have been more clear: I want to see a diesel C-class and diesel A4. Audi already has the A3 diesel, but it's $3,000 more expensive than the 2.0L TFSI.

Finally a 5-series with a diesel. FINALLY. And please just offer them with the M Kit right off the bat. It's annoying when they don't.

Yeah, I was talking about 2.0 liter diesel, not 3.0 M57. Unfortunately, we will never know it, but I would like to know how does 425 lbft feel when releasing the clutch on a 335d . 385lbft 330d was available with manual, but I never got a chance to drive it when I was over there.

The problem is that they announced (quite a few months ago) importing of both 2.0 and 3.0 liter diesels here, BOTH to come with automatic transmission standard. Again, this doesn't exactly mean that MT will not be available at least on 2.0 liter diesel, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Torque is addictive... I am really looking forward for 330dMT or 320dMT but fear if my bu**dyno will be happy with torque. For my senses F30 328 doesn't match expectations even though 0-60 are similar to 335d.

Nice to see confirmation of the upcoming diesels. Was thinking not too long ago that a 320d would be my next car, but couldn't wait after driving my 335D. A 530 / 535 d would definitely make a fitting replacement down the line though!

Actually.... I think this is probably BMW's response to Audi.
