Hood paint damage - normal?

Hey guys, so I realized the other day that I have some interesting paint damage on my hood. The paint at the border of my hood up by the windshield seems to be chipping off or pealing; I'm not sure what's causing it. I checked to see if it was the windshield wipers, but they do not in any way make contact with the hood, and I haven't opened the hood for any reason.

I have to take my car in for service - is there any way I can spin this to the dealership to try and have them fix it?

Thanks.

That is weird. Did you or anyone ever opened the hood with the wipers pulled up from the windshield? I ha seen similar damage due to that scenario I mentioned but even that the damage wasn't so wide.

The only people to open my hood are the service techs at BMW. What's even more interesting is that it's like this on both sides of the hood.

Have you ever had the hood repainted?

open your hood slowly with the wipers up. see if it will touch. Im guessing it will and thats where the damage came from.

This is very different than what I have normally seen. Usually it's peeled at two small spots where the wiper blades go up. Yours is almost the width of the hood.. Strange.

Just touch it up, imo.

I never open the hood, so I don't see how that would cause it :

I've had something similar show up before and it scraped off just by using my nail... I later found out it was actually some soap residue after washing it... Maybe try seeing if it will polish off

Better get that fixed before rust settles in. Something small can turn larger real quick

Looks like the hood was painted in the past...OEM paint shouldn't do that.

I wasn't expecting this thread to be so entertaining to me. Definitely get it fixed and it's worth a shot to see if the dealer will cover it (I doubt it, but worth a try)

FYI, the hood is aluminum. Never seen aluminum rust

At any rate, that would drive me nuts seeing that on my car. Sorry you are experiencing this, OP!!

Yea, I'm the first owner. The hood has never been painted other then when the car was assembled back across the pond.

If oem paint shouldn't do this, hopefully the dealership will help me out.

I've only seen this one other time on an older X5...very weird for OEM paint.

Hopefully the dealer will cover this...if that's straight from the factory it must have been a paint issue. Check other edges around the car for similar wear.

Hood is aluminum.
Is that unique to m3? Or all BMW? My old non BMW cars had rock chips that turned into rust spots.

Hmm learning something new everyday

Yea, I'll see what they say.

What's the worst that could happen - repainting the entire thing? Or can I just have that area painted without having to do the whole hood?

The newer higher end cars have aluminum hoods.

The usual easy way to tell is by simply lifting the hood up, you will immediately notice the weight difference between them. Aluminum is much lighter.

Another fun fact, the M3's fender is plastic. However, i had a 2012 135 in my shop this past week and to my surprise that fender was not. lol

As Krozi said, only seen it on older X5s. My '06 X5 had similar issue but was simply from design flaw/failure...lifting up blades to clean windshield meant wiper mechanism rubbed on hood even with hood closed.

The hood appears to have been re-sprayed and rather poorly..its a tell tale sign when body shops dont spray edges very carefully this is what results.
