total rip-off, you can buy a brand new M5 for less then that, not that I would want one but it sure is worth more then an M3!

It's $5k more if you want them to stop normal production to produce ONE car in a special color just for you. They make like 200 Orange cars because THEY decide to and charge the same $5k? How is that different than offering 12 color choices vs 11 or whatever it is?

As M3 production winds down, we may see more of these "markups". Dealer's often take advantage of supply and demand. Glad I grabbed my 2013 when I did.

I've seen it there for about three weeks now. But it's Newport beach so I don't blame them. Plenty of muppets here to drop that amount of $$$ for shits and giggles. Prob some dumb bird with $100k to blow and she just buys it for the color probably.

Yeah, ok, the lime rock gets you a new exhaust, but apart from that there isn't anything special about those limited editions. Getting a small number of cars from a mass produced dime a dozen vehicle, and giving that small number a unique paintjob will NOT make a future collectible.
I have a pair of mass produced dime a dozen race gloves that Sebastien Vettle signed in very limited quantity. Are they worth any more than the cost of new gloves?

+2. Actually, +15,000.

Exactly.

This is the key. I am always looking at E30 M3 for sale online. Rarely do I come across a Cecotto or Europameister edition, but when I do, I notice two things:
1. It has been very, very well taken care of. (Generally garaged, no track, all original, full maint records ect) Perfect example here.
2. It commands a much higher price than the other "run of the mill" M3.
So even though those had some kind of performance upgrade, the same will still happen with the E9X version Lime Rock or DTM or any other special edition with only cosmetics. Just the way it is. I like the "not so special right now" special editions. They will be in 20 years, and Ill get one for my son's college graduation gift then... lol!

But I gotta say I hate dealers that throw in their own special "Markup" so I walk. I saw it when I went looking for SRT8 Magnum that my buddy wanted. Dealerships had $10k+ on those. Was told it was all about supply/demand.. ridiculous.

Mark Up

I blanche at dealer mark ups as well but when I think about it they have to sell some cars pretty close to costs at times so I don't blame them for cashing in- I mean we don't hesitate to give them a very low offer if they have five of the type of vehicle we want on the lot. If we get the deal we feel happy not evil!

If there is "blame" I guess it goes to BMW for creating scarcity and ( sorry .1%ers) to the fact that there are people out there who don't even CARE about an extra $15K to buy the damn thing. I suppose those folks get bored ( the hedonic treadmill) quickly and don't care about loses so the mark up should a none issue when they sell it for that Aston they saw at the club.

These "special edition" BMW's are pure money makers for dealers and selling cars is a business. If someone is willing to pay sticker or above that is their decision. I was looking at one at my local dealership- would not budge off sticker, but had no problem selling a "regular" M3 coupe at invioce. For each his own. Not worth it in my opinion.

Probably not if they're signed "Sebastien Vettle".

Their car. They can charge whatever they think it would sell for.

Let the market decided if that car gets sold or sits forever...

I have seen those markups in every other brand when they get a
nice car in the showroom.

Yeah they can charge whaterver they want, but it sucks for the guy that really want one but does'nt have the money or the will to pay more then what it's worth!! At the end, it's the average costumer/enthousiast who is penalized!

They also go on to say..."For anyone who does not want to display their appreciation for BMW's M car and racing heritage in this way, there are plenty of silver M3s out on the used market you can build with the same components.".

considering we pay around the same price for a regular m3 with individual paint in Canada, 93K without tax 100k+ with tax. lime rock seems like a bargain
