Check out this high mileage M3!!!
I have yet to see an M3 with just over 127,xxx miles! This one has been enjoyed and not parked collecting dust, so good to see. That's well over 200.000 kms for my Canadian friends!

Here is a reality check:
At 127k miles, average 17mpg, thats 7,470 gallons of fuel, @ 3.85 per gallon = $28,537 spent just in fuel. |

I think fueleconomy.gov or .org is a website where you can input the average mpg, your commute, and compare between 2 different cars. I compared gas savings on my current new to me M3 vs B8.5 S4 and the difference in gas saved over 4 years with my commute is $7,000 I think, with my previous MK6 GTI gas saved would have been around $10,000 to $12,000 even with a larger Ko4 turbo, with a Prius I'd be saving $18,000 to maybe even over $20,000 in gas. Right now with my commute it's completely worth it to just drive the M3 on the weekends and pick up a Prius to commute in. I'd actually be saving $$$ in the end. For now whenever my wife isn't driving far I'll just use her VW CC (that I moved my Ko4 turbo & APR tune) to commute and the M3 when she is driving far. When she is driving/ working close to home I plan to just have her drive my FJ Cruiser (I have to be sure it fits in her hospital parking structure) I try to hypermile the M3 and I get 22mpg on a full tank hypermiling it... but not getting it past 3,000 rpm and rolling to a stop to keep momentum up is just too frustrating... currently regular driving I am average 18 to 19mpg on a full tank which isn't as bad as I thought when I was doing the above calculations |

When I was commuting in my M, I did the math and figured out I could pay the lease and insurance on a Ford Fiesta with the gas money I'd save...
Luckily I got my E46 beater running before I made that decision.

most hybrids would get close to 40 mpgs combined which is about 2.35 times more efficient, which comes out to $12k instead for gas cost @ 3.85. New Prius cost about $32k, used M3 costs about $45k = $13k difference in car price and $16k difference in gas costs, totalling $29k of ownership cost difference between the two cars (excluding differences in tax, depreciation, credits, 87 vs 93 octane cost, etc). Is $29k worth the driving excitement of driving an M3? Hells yea. If I drove a Prius everyday, i would likely commit suicide by 50k miles....the pace you have to drive at to get the best mpg is maddening. Last edited by mdosu; 04-18-2013 at 02:03 PM.. |

it's plausible. One way to even get up to 127k miles would be do a lot of higway driving. If the majority is weighted to highway mpgs (20 mpgs), then 17 mpgs combined is very achievable. Even in my car, I do 80% city, and I still come out with about 14-15 combined mpgs.
