Best advice you can get:

Go to a bike shop and let them fit you to a frame. If you don't, you will NOT enjoy your bike, and you could end up hurting yourself.

As far as brands, most of the good brands are pretty good, Canondale, etc.

It's a mountain bike, they're probably all good as long as you spend a little. Get the prettiest color one!

I own a bike shop in the Salt Lake Valley. I highly agree with the above statement about being fitted, it is the single most important aspect of a good purchase. As far as brands go there are quite a few good companies. Also take into acount were you purchase the bike will also service your bike... you are sorta buying into the store, so look for good service.
I think the Trek and Gary Fisher lines have a lot to offer from entry level to the top. The Gary Fisher genesis geometry has been a huge hit. Make sure that if you go out to test ride that the bikes are set up for your weight as this will also effect handling and riding characteristics. If you have any questions feel free to pm me. GL and ride hard

My friend has this bike: http://www.santacruzmtb.com/superlight/

I don't know anything about mountain bikes, but I could lift that thing with two fingers, and I'm very weak.

go to a bike shop... should have a few good ones for 300 bucks... i mean they're not the best obviously... the best are bikes with light metal frames and shocks on the front and rear... but for a daily bike... you should be fine.

i actually got owned on my old ass 8 year old huffy bike... don't even ask why i brought that to college. anyways... i ended up getting a 300$ bike... Jamis Ranger bike... not too bad in cost... and pretty good to ride. you might want to switch out seats cause they absorb water :/

Sorry, there are no places what-so-ever. You will have to fly out to Utah or Colorado. Maybe you should be getting a jetski instead.

Funny how nobody has asked how you plan to use your bike. If you are doing easy, flat trails on a bike path then you do not need anything fancy. If you are more serious about it or will be doing a lot of hills then you definately want something lite. Most of the price difference in brand name MTB's will be the components. I may be a little out of date on these but price wise Shimano XTR>XT>LX>STX>Alivio. XTR is probably overkill. I would go for at least LX if serious or racing, STX or Alivio if quality recreational.
The fork is also important. Rock Shox, Manitou (Answer), Marzocchi are all good and have different price levels.
