I believe that light turns left and right when you turn the wheel left and right, to "see around corners" adaptive lighting or something like that.

Supposedly, the "adaptive headlights part" (when you turn the wheel) only works at speeds under 40mph ONLY WHEN the headlight swtich is in "A" mode also.
Pretty sure that is what I read......correct me if I am wrong.

It was also my understanding that with bi-xenon headlights (aka headlights that have xenon low and high beams) that the halogen bulbs on the inner side of the clusters were used for flashing your high beams. If you do a temp flash (push the lever forward) it flashes halogen high beams, but if you turn on long term high beams (pull lever back towards you, and switches in place) then this activates the bi-xenon high beams and a lense moves into place over the xenon light to re-focus it.
This was the generic function of most bi-xenon style headlight clusters. Its probable that the other explanation above (from the manual no less) is also true as a secondary, or primary if you prefer, function.

The adaptive feature (steering into curves) is also part of the bi-xenons. The fact they only work on the Auto setting is annoying to me. "Xenon Adaptive Headlights Our Xenon Adaptive Headlights with distinctive corona rings began as a groundbreaking idea that went on to become a major advancement in safety. Using an electromechanical system, our adaptive headlights follow the direction of the wheels. So as you begin cornering, the headlights turn into and around the bend, which allows you to see more of the road, sooner. Xenon lights, another BMW innovation, help provide clarity by emitting twice as much light as halogen light, while using half as much energy."
