Most of the time I run around in comfort mode and the exhaust cut-outs open - I think this has a lot to do with running 800lb springs, motons, and virtually no exhaust on the E46 for a few years.

At the track I find that sport handles transitions better than "normal". This thing does need stiffer roll bars, though I am afraid to mess with the perfect lack of understeer compared to my E46.

I now have 9000 miles and have 3 track days and 1 car control clinic and would have to agree that the differences in the settings are subtle. Certainly would not miss having this option, and if aftermarket suspension is even a possibility you are better off without it.

My E46 had full GC coilovers with camber plates, and GC race sways. That car has every bit of a comfortable ride as my E92 in comfort setting, but performs better than the E92 stock. And i'll bet soup to nuts that once i get my TCK coilover set up on my car, which is softer than the E46 stock for stock, that it will be as comfortable as it is in EDC comfort.

I personally find that my car, on the streets i drive on, is much more composed and well behaved in comfort or normal. Sport is completely useless on city streets in my opinion. On a very smooth race track i can see some benefit, but not in the streets.

Just like BMW can't design a car to please 100% of the people, they can't design a suspension to perform in all situations. They've done a good job, but it has nothing to do with a switch which simply stiffens up the shocks. I am glad that people are enjoying it though.
Sport = passive. Comfort/Normal = active damping. So yeah, Normal is the best setting for 99% use. Comfort is good if you want to do drag races and have the back give a bit on launch. This being said, EDC is not a joke, if anything the POWER button/throttle map is a joke and useless. I leave that on Normal too. Suspensions are complicated things, but this is a STREET car, not a race car. Yeah, people take cars to the track all the time, modify this and that, but they still don't drive better from my experience. And to be honest, I doubt most of the drivers on this forum would gain or lose any time using ANY of the three EDC settings. BMW has done a good job with EDC IMO. If you want to track your car all the time, get something else. Or spend a ton of money and change this car.....

This is my feeling too and for the same reasons you've listed. Except I think it's there because BMW can sell it as an option. Options are where they make their money. In my opinion if BMW thought this car need EDC it should've been standard equipment and those who don't care for it can just leave it set to normal.

I'm not getting it, as I will probably be getting coilovers

I agree, that if you plan to add coilovers, then EDC isn't needed.

EDC isn't just locking the stiffness at 3 different settings. In normal and comfort the system is continuously adaptive based on driving conditions. In sport the system is locked at (i think) 75% max stiffness.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me
