Considering trading my stock E92 M3 for a Dinan S3 E39 M5
I recently became aware of a low mileage (32K, same as my 08 M3), E39 M5 that has the Dinan S3 package (supercharged 621 HP, suspension, brakes, wheels, etc...).
I spent a lot of time picking out my SSII 6MT CF roof, 19", Tech package, etc. I love the styling, and performance (though I would like more torque.) Anyway, I am tempted to trade in my E92 as a DD for the E39, due to it's uniqueness, power, and sleeper quality. Funny thing to ask on this board, but what are peoples' thoughts, and has anyone driven one of the 30 or so Dinan prepped S3's who can offer a comparison? Here is some more info on the S3: http://src.dinancars.matrixwebs.net/...20pdf%2015.pdf PS. Not that I am going to Drag the car, but there is a Youtube video of someone posting an 11.795 1/4 mile, pretty impressive specs. |

I wouldn't trade my M3 for that year M5.

I like all the feedback so far, I just spoke to my mechanic who also said he would never drop that kind of $ on an E39, no matter what mods it has. I should have mentioned I also already have an E34 Dinan/stroker M5, he didn't understand having both.
I guess I really liked the idea of the S3, because it is so unique...but I am slowly being talked out of it. BTW, my mechanic said if I was going to "trade" in the $45k range, he would be looking at a 911 TT, and I can still drive the kids around in the E34, or the SUV. Before making any decisions it sounds like I should review the "mods" section and see what tempts me...especially to get more torque out of the E92 (I don't have $20k+ to drop into SC or stroking the M3...which I assume is what it must cost)...also isn't it hard to pass smog in CA with the SC (not impossible I understand, but it will take some effort). |

As a previous E39 M5 owner, I'll join in the "don't do it" chorus.
Fantastic car in it's own right, don't get me wrong. One could even make the argument that the higher displacement S62 made for a more relaxed daily driver - when it wasn't drinking a small refinery worth of crude oil a month. But handling is not in the same league as the E90/E92 and maintenance costs will make you cry. Adding forced induction to your current M3 is clearly the better path.

i would not own any forced induction car that didn't initially come with forced induction from factory. You really need to have built the internals well for it to last...

If the OP is really hot on having that car, then he should buy it. BUT, not as a DD. Fork out another $10-$15K for a Civic (not kidding) that you can drive daily, will cost practically $0 to maintain, and gets 30mpg. Go burn up tires on that Dinan M5 on the weekends.

That would make sense if you prefer driving a Civic to a BMW. Some people like to drive beaters while they preserve their M3 for its next owner. I would not buy it if I did not drive it.

Or if you prefer spending $350 a month on gas instead of $100. Or taking your your "nice" "rare" car to a lot everyday where it gets bashed by car doors, shit on by birds, peed on by bums and occasionally might get keyed. Then, ya.. you should definitely get a Dinan M5 as a daily. And pray like a mofo it doesn't break down when you really need to be at work that day.

I think Hondas are great cars and recommend them to most people who want a nice, practical car that gets good mileage and does not cost too much. I am just not a big fan of the "keep the nice car in the garage" and drive the beater mentality. It is just a car. Drive it and enjoy it. Sell it and buy another when it is old and tired.
