Topping off oil

My service advisor mentioned that when the S65 is down 1 liter per the electronic dipstick, that the engine actually needs 2 liters due to a sump. He says he heard this directly from BMW but it is contrary to what the manual says and what others recommend on this forum. Has anybody else heard of this and found that in adding 0.5-1 liter at a time that you ultimately end up topping off about 2 L to get the reading close to the maximum level again?

Absolutely not. Not only will 2L be way too much, typically 1L is even too much. I would start with adding .5L and then get a reading at that point.

Yeah.... don't know about that SA's advice, but go ahead by added 0.5 L at a time....then just wait for the reading.

Like what the other guys said, add 0.5L when the car tells you to add 1L. The bar will go from Add +1 to over 3/4 full.

Thanks all. I thought that was strange. I'll go 0.5 L at a time.

For sure. It was somewhere in Southern California. Maybe he was trying to screw me.

Always add in small increments. Just because it shows 1L low doesn't mean you need to add an entire 1L bottle. Go 1/4 L at a time until it shows just below MAX.
