BMW adds 5w30 to M engines oil list

Everyone,
The Castrol EDGE Professional OE 5W30 Synthetic Engine Oil does NOT meet the LL-01 standard, only LL-04, the diesel standard. This is why I am confused why BMW would recommend this when it clearly does not meet the standard they posted in their PDF.

Confused. Also read on the other thread that 5w30 is for certain application.

Im in sunny california and temps get up above 100F at the track. Redline every session. Is it ok to go with 5w30 or should i stick to 10w60?

Just read it on the actual website. So my interpretation is that we have three options:

Bmw rating LL-01 synthetic oils (or)
TWS 10w30 (or)
Castrol edge 5w30 (NOT the bmw genuine 5w30 oil - i read that as a different oil)

To be fair, the bmw spec castrol 5w30 has been around for awhile and is the spec oil for many BMWs that are not on that list.

If you stick just to the document, how do you explain the s54 and s62. S62 owners have been going back and forth over 5w30 and 10w60 for over a decade. Personally I don't read into it too much...even if it is an admission, it doesn't really help us.

Anyhow, I'm running M1 0w40 and get it done at a shop for convenience. Most shops have no clue about possible bearing issues and probably just think I'm being cheap for bringing in oil from walmart....oh well

Anyone have any idea what the difference is between the standard BMW 5W30 vs. the BMW diesel 5W30?
It is confusion since BMW doesn't specify the standard 5W30, but essentially says the Castrol Euro 0W30 is ok to use since it is LL01 rated. Kawasaki has already said the Euro 0W30 is essentially the same as the BMW standard 5W30, so by the BMW specify the diesel oil???n

So an oil change in Australia will cost you close to $600 depending where you go.

Inflation in Oz is rampant (I can't quantify if the rate of salary increases is aligned), I've been away for a while but every time I go back for a hol I'm reminded of the high cost of living!

In WA labour rate is $220 an hour, so a brake fluid change will set you back at least $250. Salary increase is not at all aligned with inflation. It's ridiculous.

This might be a good option. My worry is during track usage with a tune/raised rpm limit to 8,600 and pulley, which together make the engine run hotter. The 5w-40 seems to have a little higher viscocity at higher temps vs the 5w-30.

guys, just use M1 0W40 and you'll be fine unless you race your M3. It's easy to find at your local Walmart/Wally World, and it has a high HT/HS, and it's very serviceable too with a fairly high TBN.

You won't have any warranty problems with 10w60 TWS

I'll be doing the exact same switch on my next change in about 2k miles if I don't get antsy and do it before. Weather is cooling down so my paranoia is on the rise.

I'm deciding between Mobil 1 0W40 vs Motul 300V 5W40 or 0W40 vs Motul Excess 8100 5W40 or 0W40

Per Motul's VP or marketing:

"The advantages of the Racing 300 V, is again, the film that the ester puts down and prevents metal to metal contact. A second advantage in the 300 V series is that the ester has four to five times the film strength and the tensile strength. It is more of an insurance policy."

I've also heard about race engines that run 300V being opened up and all the parts are impregnated with this film.

Sounds to me that it might be a good idea to run a few cycles of Motul 300V to get the bearing impregnated with this film to prevent further wear... then later just run Motul Xcess 8100 daily and 300V when I have several back to back track days
