many of you are probably thinking i am retarded...which i might be. despite my experience, i would still recommend this mod, but be prepared and be patient. breaking the pins underneath really didn't make any difference because the three were enough to hold it down. you also have to be very careful about how you put the lid cover on otherwise the tray will refuse to lock closed. i couldn't figure that one out at first, either. but the end result is sweet and i took greg's recommendation for a 1/4" hole in the center for one of the LEDs. I just taped off the lighter wiring and let the other LED roam free.

also, for size issues, i can barely fit my glasses in there and they are Electric "OHM" glasses. the compartment is not as big as you think. oakley juliets should probably fit, but if you have some hollywood type glasses, you're out of luck i think.
All you had to do was clip the two wires.

yeah, i didn't have splices...and i didn't want to ruin the ground and run the risk of the LEDs not working.

This along with the DIY from e90post enabled me to switch out my ashtray for a sunglass holder in less than 15 minutes. I could have done it in 13 minutes, but the DIY said T20 torx screws were used, and my car had T10 screws.

Next step...

I now have the parts to replace the lighter socket you lose with a socket on the side of the console for auxiliary power. Will post on that when I have completed it.

I want to see this. Do any holes need to be drilled?

Cheers.

Yes, it takes a 1" d. hole. I've been wanting to find a 3er with one installed in the factory position. Anyone have one that they can shoot a photo of?

That's not the one they sell for the trunk, is it? I'd like to see a pic of the factory location too; just curious.

Cheers,

It would certainly work fine in the trunk - not sure if there is another option.

Hey Greg, did you do it? I want the sunglass holder, but don't want to lose the 12V outlet. Yes, I have another in the center console, but it's useless, as anything hits the lid.

And will have to read all 4 pages to look for the part numbers. It's just the housing and the mat (2 parts), correct? And please post a part number for the outlet. We'd only have to extend the wires, but if we're lucky and they're running on the passenger side, we might not have to extend anything. Thx.

I have the parts, just haven't got to it. Thanks for the reminder. I'll let you know when it's complete.

Is that BMW part number 61346904008? I might try this. I would like the sunglasses holder but can't lose that 12v.

Yes, that is the part for the housing with the spring-loaded lid (#9), but you also need the socket. I think that is #5 in the diagram, 61 34 6 973 037. The photos shows the socket installed in the housing.

Still haven't done it. I was searching for a suitable location and never made up my mind. Thanks for the reminder.

Once I put the trim piece onto the lid the sunglass tray will not open or close properly. Any ideas? Theres not enough play to latch/unlatch the cover. I reinstalled the trim piece onto the stock ash tray and it opens and closes fine? I guess my sunglass tray is just defective?

Doubt there is any defect. It's probably just in the way you assembled it. Getting the new trim on can be a little tricky.
