Overheated DCT and randon down shifts!

I had a pretty interesting drive last weekend, there i was enjoying myself when the ABS / DSC light come on...ok no drama. A few minutes later the Overheating transmission red warning light comes on and the car goes into limp mode.

I start pottering home at a max of 40mph - after stopping the car to let it cool as per the pop-up instructions on idrive. After maybe 10 miles the car starts to downshift randomly from 5 to 2. I stop let it cool again and the same thing happens. The Mrs was freaking out at this stage worried about her life, I'm of course more concerned about my transmission.

Finally get it to the BMW dealer, they tell me the rear speed sensor will fix it all. I'm skeptical of course, but have no need to be as after 200 miles t still perfect.

But what an odd and slightly worrying scenario..in fact i searched and searched and could not find anything similar.

I realize these cars are electronic nightmares, but how can a blown rear speed sensor have such an effect?!
