ah...thanks! Pic was taken in Baltimore's Inner Harbor off Pier 6 near Pratt St.

Nice pic, too. Did you use a star effect lens or add the flares during post-processing?

Oh, a little noise reduction noise ninja (used ISO800 for that pic), slight curve adjustment, and a little 'shadows/highlights'. Since I used a noise reduction program, I pre-sharpened it a little bit before I resized.

Use shorter focal lengths with smaller apertures and longer exposures to get star effects. The light diffracts as it passes through the small aperture, creating the lines. How many lines you will get will depend on how many blades in your aperture diaphragm.

I think this right, but I'm not 100% sure...
6 blade - 6 lines
7 blade - 14 lines
8 blade - 8 lines
9 blades - 18 lines

The odd number of blades doubles the amount of lines. I also believe that the effect is reduced at longer focal lengths....

I add a pre-canned sig as a layer over my image in PS. Then I just tweak the fill slightly and drop the opacity.

Given all that can be done with PS, I think a lot of us are PS noobs.

A bit old but it's more or less a good, beginner overview for layers: http://www.elated.com/articles/introduction-to-layers/
