Very cheap right now and VERY few cars out there. The car has presence when you see it.

Worthless article... There are too many e92 M3's to be a classic. Wish list it sounds like to me.

Did you guys read the comments? It reads like a bunch of hicks who are angry at anything that's not a 68 camaro ss or a 54 corvette.

From what I see out there on classic car auctions, the cars that fetch hefty premiums laregly go for two reasons.

In the domestic markets, the baby boomers and pre baby boomers who are wealthy now, love to get their hands on that dream car that got away when they were younger. American cars were THE THING back in past decades and those cars held a spot in the heart of auto enthusiasts and still do. There are a lot of guys who have a love today for those same beautiful/powerful for their time cars out there.

The other reason I notice is simply a racing pedigree. Any car that successfully handed the competition its ass fetches a lot of money. A couple obviousl examples being the 250 GTO and the Ford GT40 (which for three years straight owned Ferrari after being built specifically to beat Ferrari). Same with older Alfa Romeos and other european sports cars. No one gives a shit about non race winning cars. Maybe a car that was so far ahead of its time will command high prices also. Such as MclLaren F1's, Ferrari F40s etc. These cars crushed everything that competed with them during the day. As did the 959 Porsche which is simply not homologated for US road use. We already know the Enzo won't be loved much more than that albatross of an exotic we know as the F50 (FAIL).

A limited production run or a once loved but phased out technology won't ensure future demand. It's nice to think that our nice NA V8s will command a premium in the future, but WTF. It may be 30 years before anyone cares to own an E92 garage queen M3. Only the E30 M3 holds reasonable value and it's not even much better than infaltion adjusted today at best. The only modern ish M3 I see holding any value far into the future is the M3 CSL. And even at that, the crap SMG will hurt its desirability.

Yeah, I honestly can't believe what people will pay for a parts bin car (albiet a very good parts bin car). Also, the figure right now is likely far closer to 60 than 70, though still.

Supply and demand. There just aren't many of them out there. I'm sure the price will go down when the M2 is released though. But I do agree the 1M will be a classic like an E30 M3 IMO

Not sure where they are getting the $70k 1M figure from. There are one or two on ebay for around $50k.

No, I don't think it will be a future classic. It doesn't really have the makings of one -- it has absolutely no racing heritage, unlike the E30 M3, it was a parts bin "afterthought" by BMW, and generally turbo engines aren't the hallmark of what you want in a classic, particularly not a BMW classic. The only things it has going for it is scarcity and was generally considered to be a good car, albiet generally inferior to the E92 M3 where many of the parts were scavenged from. Personally I think it's a market bubble from people speculating that it will be a future classic, rather than supported by fundamentals, but I guess we will see.

The original R32 went through something similar, though not nearly to the same degree, where 2-3 years after it was introduced, used examples were fetching at least as much if not more than it sold for new, but at 5+ years it started dropping like anything else once people started moving on to other cars. A nice unmodded low mileage example (mine certainly wouldn't qualify) still fetches a pretty good percentage of the original asking, so the 1M might follow that model, but I think anyone that pays 60k + for a 1M right now is going to be very sorry.

I didn't see any nationwide on autotrader for 70k, but plenty for 60k and higher, with a few close to 70k. There were a few not that much more than 50k. I'm a little surprised at the range in value, since they are essentially identical cars other than color, and if you have 50k+ to spend on a used car, I'd think you'd have the money to travel a little to get the best mileage/price example you can find. Not trying to talk the market down -- I have no dislike for the 1M, just a little puzzled at what people are willing to pay right now.
