Your Opinion on This Car? [Now ...Post Purchase Report]

I am thinking of getting a beater for every day use but I just can not see myself spending more than $20K on it. Among a few options I have looked into, I really like the older (pre 2008) GTI's. I would love to get a 2008 R32 but the nice ones definitely cost more than my budget allows.

Then I came across this deal on eBay for a clean and modded '06 GTI with sports and high performance package. I sort of happen to know the seller and the guy who won the bid this morning just told him he can not get financing for the car. So, he is willing to let me have it at the same price of $15.9K. The mileage of 48K is a bit higher than I like but the car seems to be have been taken care of quite well. I checked the vehicle history and everything looks clean. Tile is clear, no accidents and seems like it was a 1 owner car until it was traded in an auction (probably by the dealer who took it as a trade in) in January of this year. List of mods done are in the last image below in the auction description.

So, I am wondering if you guys who know lot mre about cars than I do, can give me your $0.02 .....Yay? ...Nay? ....May be?

Thanks for all the input in advance

I don't know how good of a deal this is, but the car itself looks pretty nice. I wouldn't mind sporting that around.

Why did you make 2008 the cutoff when the aesthetics didn't change until the 2010 model?

I sold my 2008.5 GTI with 16k on it for $18.5K (MINT car - all options ex Nav). You can do MUCH better than this car and the 2008.5 and 2009s are MUCH more reliable than the 2006-08. The TSI is the motor you want (not FSI).

Big reason of why I bought my 330 over a GTI (was strongly considering both) is that unmolested GTIs are pretty hard to come by for a good price. I personally wouldn't buy a car unless it was damn near bone stock, regardless of anything else.

That being said, I'd love to have a GTI to work on. Swap front ends with a jetta for free and it will look AMAZING.

Damn ...Why didn't you call me, dude?

Well, I looked and as far as I can tell, used, clean, low mileage 2008 and 2009's go more than $20K here in SoCal. The other thing that makes me consider this particular car is that it's modded extensively and tastefully. I can not see myself adding anything to it except a new set of shoes in the near future. And I am thinking of giving it to my 16 year old son once he starts driving next year. I am sure he'd like the ride as his first car.

Thanks for the great tips. Please define "unmolested" in more detail

When I think of a car for everyday use for around $20k, I think Fiesta or Elantra or something that I know I'm going to have a lot of warranty on and don't have to worry about whether it's been beaten on or anything like that.

But, if you don't care about that stuff, I don't see what's wrong with the car you are asking about besides the reliability aspect. Can you find an 08.5+ around you for that price?

EDIT: nevermind on a couple of those questions. You posted answers while I was writing my post.

My definition of molested would be the vehicle pictured in post 1.

After spending 8 years in a Jetta, I can honestly tell you to run away from those things. Bought it brand new and drove for 120K miles.

I did not really have any major issues, but the amount of little shit that I had to deal with, was ridiculous and non-stop.

GTIs are cool cars. Just make sure you tell everybody you're going to upgrade the turbos, or bitches wont love you.
