RS4 M3 prices, why?
Looking at used cars, in this case M3 sedan vs audi RS4 and it seems that the RS4 always runs many $1000's higher than the M3 even though it offers less performance.
Is it just that the RS4 is more rare? Because it's out of production? I guess the same could be said for S cars when compared to the 335. Overall the BMW's are better cars IMO yet retain less value. |

Limited production, seventy extra hp (of course it weighs more), fewer production years (in more recent years) and being an RS car all lead to that. I'd guess there are about 20 M3's for every RS4. There's also the fact that it's a more practical sedan instead of a coupe, and that they're all three pedal cars.
If you think it has less performance, don't look at track performance or anything over about 80 mph, as the RS4 does quite well at speed and tends to hold its own on a track too, which is impressive for how heavy it is and the fact that the engine is in front of the suspension. |

I'd give the nod to availability on the market due to overall production quanitities. Chances are that you'll find many more used M3s available than RS4s.
Also, since the M3s are still in production, the used market has to offer a substantial discount to pull people away from buying a new car. Less so for the RS4. |

Less performance for an RS4? Have you actually driven one yet? Better get on it then, i wouldn't let someone else's opinion dictate my purchase.
I sold my RS4 for the M3 i have now. I loved that car to bits but it was time for a change. I have a disease. You need to decide if you want AWD, if you don't need/want it then go M3. The RS4 engine is epic, handles fantastic, unique, limited production and somewhat a sleeper car unless you know what they are all about. I went to M3 to hold me over for the RS5, i love the quattro awd system as well, don't believe the naysayers that RWD is the only way to go on a track. Take an RS4 to the track and you will be pleasantly surprised. Besides, the engine between your ears is the most important tool on the racetrack regardless of what drivetrain you have. |

420hp vs 414 the AWD will have more drivetrain loss but will make that up with grip from a standstill, the RS4 weighs more with more weight in front of the front axle. GmBH did a great job handling that issue like Ford has done with the live rear axle or Porsche has with the all the weight in the 911’s rear but it’s still there.
They are both great cars but I’m thinking the M3 is the better performer. Now I like AWD, it’s handy and confidence inspiring, is it a must have? No, but it helps a lot as whatever car I have is run 16k a year in snow, rain or shine. I was just wondering why typically RS4’s cost more than M3 sedans and my gut was telling me limited production so supply/demand but figured I’d ask. It is interesting to note that it seems that AMG cars depreciate more than M cars and RS cars depreciate less than M cars on average, varies from model to model of course. |

From a British perspective the M3 v RS4 thing is one that brings up a few things.
I have an E90 M3, my brother has an RS4, we both agree they are fantastic cars and we both agree that each has its benefits. If its dry, the M3 is quicker other than 0-30, by the time both get to 60 the M3 has drawn level and after that the M3 pulls away - but not by huge margins until the speeds get serious when the M3 walks away. If its wet (and it does rain a lot here) the RS4 has a bigger advantage in a straightline sprint off the mark - to the point where unless you are prepared to go to speeds that would involve jail sentences in the UK, the RS4 is quicker. I bought my E90 6 months ago when its was 10 months old, my brother bought his RS4 more recently, its 3 years old but we paid pretty much the same price give or take a few thousand. Neither of us would swap for the others car. Why the RS4 holds its value so well compared to the M3 is one i cant answer, but like my brother, people are prepared to pay for an RS4 especially, probably even more since the RS5 is now considered so disappointing by those who have driven it compared to the RS4 or M3. He has been out in my M3 and still bought an RS4 that was 2 years older at the same money. One thing I will say, the RS4 totally owns the M3 on the noise stakes. The RS4 sounds so good, the M3 sounds a bit weak in comparison - anyone know if they sell the Gintani exhaust in the UK ??? ;-) Tricky

1. HP is almost identical. 2. M3 can be had with 4 doors as well 3. More performance for RS4 over 80 mph, really? At higher speeds the M3 is at its best against the RS4, listen to the RS4 driver after this comparison: Where did you get your information from or did you just make it up

Funny........ RS4 more exclusive??? Not here in Germany. I see far more RS4's than I see M3's out on the autobahn. But the ones I have seen, I only saw for a few seconds........ VERY FAST!!!

Audi is all about supply and demand especially with the RS models.

The RS-4 was inspired, when i got my A5 there was one left on the showroom floor, last new one. I wish I knew what I was looking at then. Would have bought it. I was waiting on Rs-5 but no stick and pales compared to M3. BTW the audi 4.2L does sound quite sweet.

Are you sure you're seeing RS4s and not S4s? RS4s are FAR more expensive than either the S4 or M3. I've seen exactly one RS4 and one RS6 since I've been here. I seem M3s all over the place, not to mention at our club meets. Hell, I've seen more M5s than RS4s or RS6s.

Absolutely Positive.......... the trek between Bamberg and Nuremburg on A70 is where I ALWYS see 1-3 coming or going. I have yet to see another M3 on the Autobahn. Seen a few on the street, never on the bahn. I think it is location specific where you see the most of a particular brand of car........ Stuttgart has TONS of BMWs and Porsches. Munich area has tons of Mercedes and Audi. Wiesbaden/Mainz alot of BMW's. Here in Ober Franken, it seems there are far more Audis in general than BMW's.

I need to head up there. I LOVE the RS4.
I agree about Stuttgart. We went up there for the auto show and there were Porsches everywhere. A lot of Ferraris too. Weird that car ownership is so clustered here. |

Dude, there is a big difference between "pleasantly surprised" and "blew my mind". Where it really counts, the M3 is a far more entertaining (and faster) car, so it would be worth it even if the price disparity were reversed.
