Change the oil if buying from Carmax
Just picked up a 2012 yesterday from carmax. The car is in great shape cosmetically and other than a rattle had a clean service record at 21k mi. But I requested carmax'a records which shows they changed the oil. Great now I don't need to, except they put in 5w-30. Now I have the car I've lusted after for the past 7 years sitting in my garage and can't drive it until it gets changed. Fighting with them to pay for the oil, but they want me to drive it back so they can change it.

Thanks for the reassurance, just want to drive!! I'm sure they will have to order filter and oil though. I doubt they have 10w-60 sitting around their service center, nor a filter. Just being inpatient. I will just go wash it again.

Carmax is a great place to buy an M3, that's where I got mine and 30,000 miles later it's still running strong. I also hope you got the Maxcare warranty because you can use it both at the BMW dealership and at any independent ASE certified mechanic.
That being said... don't waste your time going back to them to change the oil. - They will tell you they will change the oil, however I would not trust that they changed the oil with the proper oil unless you actually sit there and watch them do it. - They will probably make up excuses and say they will change it with an OEM equivalent such as LiquiMoly 10w60 or they may claim that the 5w-30 is still a spec oem oil... which is the weight of one of BMW's approved oils btw - They may even tell you they changed the oil when in reality they didn't change anything. - Since they work on so many different branded cars and models... I wouldn't doubt that they only drained oil from one sump and not the other In fact don't waste your time going back to them for any warranty related issue... just pay the dealership copay or better yet indie shop If I where you, Instead of washing the car, you could've spent that time changing the oil yourself so that you can pull an oil sample to send for analysis and for peace of mind that the right oil is in the car. And just keep records of your oil changes and maintenance for warranty purposes. Congrats on the new M |

Carmax is using Lubro Moly 10W-60 on BMW M vehicles and Mahle oil filters from Carquest or Worldpac.Maxcare-take it to BMW dealer, not to Carmax service.

If you have been lusting this car for 7 years why don't you just become one with it and do the job yourself? That is of course unless you put more faith in a CarMax EE doing a better job changing the oil than you can. Cheap piece of mind.

I would change the oil in any car upon purchase. Who knows what oil they put in. It's worth it to pay for the peace of mind that the proper oil is in there. I'm pretty impatient at times too, but I know it'll be worth it when I get to drive the car without worries.

How was your purchase experience at CarMax? Did they budge at all on the price? They have a few I'm looking at but the prices seem to be all over the place.

And yes, the prices are all over the place. I've seen a car at 2 different stores, one with more mileage and seemed more worn out from the pics and it was going for $3000 more than the other one.

my local o'reilly's carries the right oil, though i order the oil change kit from ECS. diy oil change couldn't be easier with these cars.
