Arrow The Ultimate Order / Ship Tracking Guide!

Here's a comprehensive BMW tracking guide originally put together by Jeff G.

How to track your new BMW through the production and shipping cycles in the modern age of information:
(NOTE: This only works for BMW and Mini Vehicles, This write-up is primarily focused on East Coast delivery options.)

(Below)
Here's the car I ordered:

(Below)
As outfitted on the "Build Your Own" section of the BMW website, and as stipulated with the features
to my dealer for my order:

Tracking my BMW 335i:
1.
First: you'll need the vehicle "VIN" number from your dealer, or a vehicle production number.
As soon as the dealer officially orders the car through the BMW allocation system, they'll get the VIN number, and then you
can get the VIN number from the dealer -just ask them.

Here's my Vin: WBAWC73569E06XXXX

1.2 - What my Vin number means:

WBA WC73 5 6 9 E06XXXX
WBA
= BMW AG
WC73
= Model code of my 335i
5
=Safety restraint identifier, indication of seat belts, duel advanced airbags, rear/side airbags, curtain airbags, ect.
6
= check digit determined by vin
9
= model year, "9" code indicates a 2009 manufacture date (see the code in the chart below)
J
= Plant code, "Regensburg" Germany (A=Munich)
06XXXX= Sequential production number of my car.

(Below)
1.3 - BMW Vin Example:

2.
You can then get "rough" update on your cars progress from BMW NA. The production status is listed in the secure member's area of the BMW website. You'll need the VIN number to sign up for the members area. This information can be 48 hours (or more) behind the actual status of the car.

(Below)
This is the status of my 335i as shown in the BMW NA Member's Area Website : "Awaiting Transport..."

(Below)
And, another view of the status: "Awaiting Transport.. in the timeline view..."

Tracking the car status via phone, BMW North America:
(This information can, as well, be more than 48 hours behind the actual status)
• Call: (1-800) 831-1117
• Say "Vehicle Production Status" when prompted... or at any time after the recording starts
• then, you will be asked for your production number, or last seven digits of your vin number...
• then say - the last seven digits of your VIN. In my case: E06XXXX, (Read as, for example: E, Zero,6,ex,ex,ex,ex.)
Carefully annunciate the Es, Ts and Bs - the system is voice recognition based, and sometimes gets confused with Es
and Ts and Bs.
• then say "yes" when the voice reads it back - if correct... if not correct say "no," and repeat... (you can get it wrong 3 times,
and then the system kicks you to a live human, if you're calling during business hours... if not, BMW will give you their
operating hours for the office. Hang up, and try again if they're closed.)
• then say "partial VIN number," if not a production number... when asked...
• then, the system will give you the status of you vehicle production within the last 24 hours.

These are the BMW Status Code Description:
0 Order deleted by NA
17 Order not Specified

3.
Once the vehicle is listed as "En Route," you can begin following the progress in detail by other means. Once on a ship, BMW status on their website will no longer provide a detailed update, but you can still continue to track the vehicle.

3.1 - BMW ships with several cargo lines and carriers, depending on the destination.

• Wallenius&Wilhelmsen (
parent company for several ship lines listed below)
• EUKOR
- a division of Wallenius Lines
• UECC
- another division of Wallenius Lines
• A.P. Möller
- yet another division and ship line owned or operated by Wallenius Lines
• Mark 1 Shipping
- owned or operated by Wallenius Lines
• K-LINE
(Usually BMW West Coast deliveries only, but sometimes ships to NY/NJ as NYK-Line) K-Line is not a W&W company
• ARC
- Often operated by, or under the direction of Wallenius Lines

4. Most BMWs are shipped out of the port of Bremerhaven Germany
(Known by the faithful as: "Bimmer Heaven")
Port Location:
Latitude: 53.5715° (decimal)
Longitude: 8.546° (decimal)

(Below)
Port: Bremerhaven Germany

(Below)

5. Typical BMW Shipping Ports of Call:

Here's the typical EU to NA ports of call for the weekly car transport vessels run by Wallenius & Wilhelmsen. The destination listed on your ships itinerary will likely be the next port, and not your cars final destination.

East Coast Delivery:
Bremerhaven (port of exit)
Zeebrugge
Southampton
Halifax
New York (actually New Jersey)
Baltimore
Charleston
Brunswick
Galveston

7. Figuring out which ship your car may be on:

• The easiest way is to ask your dealer. He'll have a detailed day by day track of his allocation shipments. Just call, and they'll give you the ships name.
• In advance of that, you can get a good idea of your ship's name by backing up the schedule you were given when you ordered the car, and finding the ships who's schedule aligns with the approximate final port of entry arrival date.

7.1 - The typical BMW transport schedule:
• Car to be picked up by you at the dealer on "X" date, for example: June 25th
• Subtract 1- 2 days at the dealer to detail the car, and install any remaining dealer options : June 24
• Subtract 2-3 days in transit from the port to the dealer, so: June 22, 23, in transit via truck to the dealer from the VPC (Vehicle Preparation Center.)
Your transport time will vary based on your distance from ports of arrival.
Ground shipping on the East Coast is commonly carried out by: "Bavarian Motor Transport," in Enclosed Freight Liners
• Subtract another 3 days, the car will typically spend June 19, 20, 21 at the VPC, at the port of entry
• Now look for ships who's itineraries list your port of arrival on, or close to that date, in this example, the Port of NY/NJ arriving sometime around June 18th.

7.2 - Ship Schedules:
The Shipping schedules are posted as a PDF at the Wallenius Wilhelmsen website, and changes, but look for the Westbound schedule chart.
(Wallenius Wilhelmsen: http://schedule.2wglobal.com/AppSche...countryList.do)
K line also posts their schedules on their website as a PDF, and those are usually West Coast bound ships - but not always

8. Track your car, if shipped by Wallenius Wilhelmsen, using the VIN #:
WBAWC73569E06XXXX
http://www.2wglobal.com/www/wep/index.jsp
• Go to "track and trace" cargo section on the homepage, at the bottom right.
(as displayed June 2009, this function has changed location over the months)
• Enter the VIN in the "Cargo ID" field of the form
• Hit "Track"
• Status will be displayed once Wallenius has taken taken possession of the car and selected it for shipment.
• You will then know the ships name.
• If "no records are available" is displayed, Wallenius Wilhelmsen does not yet have your car in their possession, your car is not being
transported by their fleet, or the tracking system is lagging behind actual status - which is quite common.

NOTE: My car never was displayed on this tracking site although Wallenius Wilhelmsen is listed as the logistics carrier, and agent for my ship, operated by ARC.

10. Ship tracking live - status of ship locations and speeds, with ship pictures. Refreshed every 90 seconds:

10.1 - Once you know what ship your car is on, you can follow the ships progress.

http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/
Search by Vessel Name, Port, or Ocean Area.

• Click on the port from the list: BREMERHAVEN
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/dat...ENT&level0=300

• Another site for Information on your ship:
(tracking requires sign in)
http://www.digital-seas.com/vessel_s...l_archive.html

• Another way of tracking the ship: by name and call sign
http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/

For sailwx, enter the port latitude, and longitude of Bremerhaven, the port BMW usually ships their cars out of.
Latitude: 53.5715° (decimal)
Longitude: 8.546° (decimal)
Port: Bremerhaven
Location: Bremerhaven, Germany

! NOTE: sailwx data usually appears out of date by several days, if not months. As opposed to marinetraffic, which is updated about every two minutes. I have attempted to track ships on sailwx, whose last known location was marked as "August, 2008, when tracking in June of 2009." The sailwx site however, is the only service that will follow your ship through the open ocean of the Atlantic.

• Ship tracking around the UK seas only, and lots of picture of the ships:
The "Marine Traffic" website often loses the ship when off the coast of England. The ship is shown as "out of range." There is a blind spot for their tracking in this specific area, but you can follow it in this area of transit via this site when the Marine Traffic site goes blind:
http://www.shipais.com/
(this site can at times fall behind timely tracking - "Integrity" showed a "last signal" that was 48 hours old)

• An excellent and accurate site for ship tracking around the UK:

11.1 - Live from Breverhaven Germany, April 6th, 2009
If you look to the North of the The "Osthafen/Whendebecken" harbor loading area on the aerial map, you'll see a bridge that runs over the railroad automotive arrival tracks. When you look at the webcam view (below 2 photos), you'll see the bridge, looking back
towards the loading area to the South. This is updated about every 2 minutes. If you have two windows open on your browser, both the webcam, and the Marine Traffic site will align - telling you what ship you're seeing in the webcam by virtue of the aerial view of the port on the MarineTraffic.com site.

Tracking my ship, the Integrity:
Many BMWs are loaded onto car carrier ships in the "Automobilexport" port sections in Breverhaven. Look for the
"Osthafen/Whendebecken" harbor loading area, it is a common staging area for BMW's awaiting export, South of
"AmNordhafen" perimeter road.

Integrity's movements, June 1st through June 6th:
• MarineTraffic, shows Integrity as in port at Bremerhaven Germany, West of auto export "Whendebecken" harbor loading area as of June 1, 2009.
• In port, moored in the "Osthafen/Whendebecken" harbor loading area of Bremerhaven, June 4th, 10:00am EST
• Shown as moved in port at 7:20 pm EST June 4th to a new loading area to the South, now in "Kaiserhafen ll" harbor, Bremerhaven. • Moved out of port as of June 5th.

SUPPLEMENTAL / SUMMARIZED ORDER and DELIVERY TRACKING GUIDE

Here's another shorter guide which provides some summaries of the entire process and each step to order and delivery tracking.

Quote:
We’ve been talking a lot about this for weeks, so I thought I would summarize all this information for folks that are still waiting on their cars and those that are new to M3POST.

Once you place your order and give your dealer a deposit, they can then put your configuration into the ordering system and it will give you a production number. If they were able to modify an existing order (for example change color etc.), then your car will initially show up with different options, but it will eventually change.

You can take your Production Number and go online to track your vehicle’s status. Keep in mind that this system is usually a week behind. BMW Owner’s Circle (OC) http://www.bmwusa.com/OwnersCircle/ gives you very little information to simplify the waiting process (and no, we don’t like that, we like detail!) and break the order process into 5 stages:

On Order
As soon as your dealer gives you your production number, it shows up in OC as ‘On Order.’ You should also get a Production Week Number when your car will be produced. One thing to note, that when you go online right after you get your production number, the options you selected when you placed your order will not show up. In fact, it will never show up in OC, ever. The other thing, so that you don’t freak out initially, is that sometimes a dealer can modify an incoming order destined for their dealership, which ends up showing as another color under OC. However, this only takes a few days to update. For example, when I placed my order for Sparkling Graphite, it initially showed up as Alpine White with Terra Leather interior.

Scheduled For Production
Approximately three days prior to your car going into production, OC will reach this stage. The 800 automated information number is much more accurate than Owner's Circle (by two days or so), so use it with your production number to figure out what's going on with your car. The number is 1-800-831-1117; say “Vehicle Production Status” and then read out your production number. If your car production is complete, it will say “Your vehicle production is complete.” This whole stage takes a week or less.

Awaiting Transport
Your car gets loaded onto a train and is then driven to Bremerhaven, where it is unloaded and then has to wait for a ship. This is the painful part; you have no idea how many cars are ahead of yours in line to get on a ship, so you have to just keep hoping it doesn’t take too long. Mine took 8 days from production completion to getting on the ship. A ship sails every 3-4 days destined for the United States East Coast. Not sure how different things are for the West Coast.

En Route
As soon as your status changes to “In Transit” on the 800 number, or to “En Route” on the OC, check the shipping company’s website (Schedules) to figure out what ship your car is on. Or just call your dealer; they know exactly what ship your car is on, and the estimated times of when it will arrive and leave the Prep Center. The dealer has a tool that tells you everything, so leverage this to get the name of your ship so you don’t have to guess.

For east coast deliveries, the shipping company’s website (Wallenius Wilhelmsen) is http://www.2wglobal.com/www/WEP/index.jsp. They update their schedule in real-time and changes the color of the ‘stops’ to Red after the ship arrives at different ports, signifying that the ship has docked. My ship took exactly 11 days to get from Bremerhaven to New York City. Sometimes, if your ship reports its status, you can track your ship while it makes its way across the pond. Go to http://www.sailwx.info/ and search by ship name. Keep in mind that my ship never showed up, so its really luck that you may see it.

For west coast deliveries, the shipping company's website (NYK Lines) is http://www2.nykline.com/home/index.html. You can also use http://www.dbh.de/index.php?id=151&L=0
to track the departure of your ship from Bremerhaven to Port Hueneme. Apparently NYK Line doesn't make it easy to find your ship. After that, if you want to know when your ship is planning to dock in San Diego, San Diego Marine Information Systems will give you the arrival schedule for Port Hueneme (west coast delivery) at
http://www.sdmis.org/schedule/.

At Preparation Center
Depending on how much time has lapsed between your ship docking and your car getting off the ship, it may take a while to show up at the Vehicle Preparation Center. A lot of wait times in this area is due to the number of cars ahead of yours, and the time it takes to actually wash off all the foreign soil of every vehicle that comes off the ship. Generally, this takes about 7-14 days.

At your BMW Center
Once your car reaches your dealer, they have to PDI your vehicle, which basically means remove shipping blocks, remove the plastic on the inside, check the vehicle from top to bottom, add any dealer installed options (CD Changer, Tint, Aluminum Pedals etc.) and finally, call you up to come pick up your new baby.

If you have any doubts or questions, remember, your dealer has a system that can tell you exactly where your car is, so always defer to your dealer for more information. Hope this helps.

DETAILED SHIP TRACKING GUIDE:

If you are going crazy over the location of the ship that is carrying your beloved BMW, let me offer you the benefit of my pre-occupation with tracking my E92.

There are two ways that your ship can be tracked on its voyage. When it is close to shore, the AIS (http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/enav/ais/default.htm ) is in use. This an automatic system and is limited to only ships within radio range. When your ship is out in open water, you need to rely on WMO-VOS (http://vos.noaa.gov/vos_scheme.shtml). The problem with this system is that it is a voluntary one and not all ships participate.

Once you have determined the name of your ship there are various websites that offer you the ability to track your vessel. These sites are free and some only require you to register to get the most current updated information.

While your ship is in the North Sea, which includes the ports of Bremerhaven, Antwerp, Zeebrugge, etc., vesseltracker.com (http://www.vesseltracker.com/en/Home.html) provides up to a 2 hour delay of your ships position. This is an AIS based website. Free registration is required for this feature.
There is another AIS website, but I will not mention that now for specific reasons which I will explain later.

After your ship leaves the North Sea on her way to the Atlantic Ocean, she passes through the English Channel. You can track her movements at http://www.ais-live.co.uk/ which is another AIS based website. This site is free, information is real-time and does not require registration.

Once through the English Channel, your ship begins her trans-Atlantic crossing. To continue tracking, you must cross your fingers and hope that your ship is one that voluntarily participates in the WMO-VOS program. If she participates, you can track her progress at http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/index.html. If you enter the ships name and can not pull up any reports, try entering her call sign.

This is a free site, information is usually updated 2 hours after a ship reports their position and registration is not required.

If your ship does not participate, figure that it takes 6-7 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean until you can resume tracking with the following website.

Earlier in this post I mentioned another AIS based website. http://www.aislive.com/AISLIVEPORTAL...ndex=0&tabid=1 It is a global AIS tracking service that provides real-time information. It can be used for ports all over the world. The reason why you should not use it from the time your ship leaves Bremerhaven is that you need to register for a free trial which gives you only 2 weeks access to the subscriber area. This is important for those whose ships are going to ports not offered to the non-registered user or their voyage is longer than 14 days.

There also seems to be a lag in the time you first register and when you get your sign-in information. Remember to completely fill in the form.

BMW uses different shipping companies for east and west coast. For west coast, BMW uses NYKLine for shipping, however, NYKLine did not have the updated schedule on the web like Wallenius Wilhelmsen (east coast deliveries) has.

Below are some useful links to track the ships. (source credited to e36M3r @ bimmerfest.com)

You put in the date your car finished production and transfer to the port for shipping schedule. That's your best bet for all the possible ships your car might go onto. You only put in information on the "Export" side, no need to put anything on the "Import" side.

car is in

My car reached the Port of NY on Saturday May 21 and already has been delivered to my dealer (today May 25) in VA about 430 miles from the port. I was expecting it to take quite a bit longer. Amazing! I'll pick it up tomorrow. Car was ordered at my dealer on March 30.

Yeah, thanks much for putting this information out there. It is a big help as I not-so-patiently await my new ride.

FYI, there is a delay with the shipping company's website. My E90 was loaded on 5/25 and today (5/27) was the first time it registered my VIN as "in transit". So be patient; your VIN will eventually show up.

Even 2 days with no info was enough to put me over the edge!

South African Order Tracking

In South Africa this system is working very well but some dealers are not informing their clients or linking the orders correctly

Visit www.bmw.co.za

Click on the owners circle link and go to review vehicle order status

Enter your Surname and ID number and the order number

If the system is not working , the dealer needs to enter the order number into the quoting program called Focus , tick OTP signed and link the client's OTP (Offer to Purchase ) with the order number under Oasis order management (in the Focus program )

Well I beleive everyone here is very lucky in the transit times for your cars , here in hawaii we have to waite around 12 weeks time of order to arrival at VPC, then another 2 weeks there, then load onto another trailer, then another ship to hawaii another 2 weeks, then a another week at the dealer before pick up, so in all around 17-20 weeks from time of order to drive time. So consider all that we have to go thru before we here in the aloha state have our ride, you have been driving yours for over a month, when we have ordered at the same time. Peace and good will

I have a question:

How do you know for sure it's coming from Germany or SA? Is this something that you can find out based on your production #? I ask because when I look up the shipper information, I need to know the port of origin.

Yep, there is a VIN guide somewhere on this site that talks about how to decode your VIN to determine where its manufactured from.

Until September production however, every 325i destined for the US is coming from Germany, not SA. Again, this is what i've heard on this post.

Anxiety is setting in as it appears that delays are accumulating. The original story was week 26 delivery (to me), which is next week, then end of June, now first week of July. Based on this information, I've sold my car, and hand it over this weekend, fully expecting to have to rent a car for up to 2 weeks to cover the "gap".

I'm on the east coast, west of Boston, Mass and checked with my Sales Advisor today. While the 800 number says my car is at the port , waiting for a ship, he says his system tells him it is on its way to the port (Bremerhaven), to be shipped to Port Elizabeth, New Jersey. He also says that a ship has not been assigned.

Now I'm getting confused. The website above does not list any New Jersey destination.

Has anyone else had their car shipped from Bremerhaven to Port Elizabeth?

Do you know the shipping line and their website information?

How long did the shipping take, port-to-port?

What is your best guess on delivery timing?

Thanks
John

My car took 10 days from Bremerhaven to the NEAT port, NJ. They also go into port Elizabeath, NJ. Took 4 days from the US port to Milford, De.
I ordered my 325i on 28 April, built by 17 May, at port 19 May, departed Bremerhaven 19 May, arrived NEAT, NJ 29 May, arrived Milford 2 June, picked it up on 3 June! Love It ! ! !
Hope this helps!!!

Hi Fred (jubol)

This is a BIG help! Based on your date of departure from Bremerhaven, I could still be looking at first week in July as being achievable if my E90 gets on board a ship in the next couple of days. I feel a lot better. The ache is subsiding!

Thanks!

Useful Links for Tracking Shipments

Thanks to jubol for providing the information behind these.

These look like useful links for identifying and locating ships and their schedules.

NEAT - North East Automarine Terminal

Port of New York and New Jersey

Wallenius Wilhelmsen (yes, this is listed elsewhere, I included it for completeness)

Ship Locations on a global map. If you know the name of your ship, you can search for it (this site is a little slow, be patient)

NYKline is so weak. I can't find any information on any of their ships on that ship locations site. They don't report them for some reason. Oh well. It's a little more than halfway here on its way to LA. Travel time is just about 4 weeks from Germany to San Diego.
