Macht Schnell Intake + Pullies Review and Dyno

I stopped by EAS a little over a week ago and meant to write a little review to share my impressions.

Those that know me also know that I'm not a big power nut. Unlike many I'm easily content with my car's output. My E46 was heavily modded but there was nothing done for power other than a set of headers (which yelded 20hp).

Basically, give me suspension/brakes/tires and I'm happy camper. Same thing with the E90. Honestly the car is a beast in stock form and plenty fast for me.

With that said, the S65 is so responsive to bolt-ons compared to previous NA Motorsport engines that it's just too tempting not to squeeze a few ponies!

My 'power plan' for this car consists of the following 2 steps:

1) MS stage 2 intake + MS pullies
2) Primary cat delete + tune

From my research those should yeld some pretty sizeable gains.

So anyways before I bore you with my life story, here are the numbers of part 1 of my power mods:

Before: 353whp and 258tq SAE.

I was told these are healthy numbers for a bone stock car. Adding a 18% drivetrain loss puts it right at 416hp which is pretty dead on with what's to be expected if you ask me!

After: 366whp and 264tq SAE.

Results: +13whp + 6wtq!

Mind you we only did a couple of 'after' runs and could've likely obtained a reading with a couple more ponies before plateau-ing but people were waiting and I had to get somewhere.

A couple observations:
The torque increase is very consistent and present throughout the most of the powerband. The car is pretty much breaking into the 250s most of the time!

Also, the car is now pretty much hitting 350whp at 7000rpm when it only had that much at 8000 stock. That's definitely a good thing on the track where I spend most of my time way up in the RPMs ^^

Sound:
It is certainly understated. I expected more induction noise from such large K&N style filter but then again it is enclosed in the factory box. It is a touch louder over stock. Just cruising around it's 100% undetectable. It's when you go WOT that you're reminded that the intake isn't stock.

I had a CAI on my E36 and it was obnoxious and had that really loud and obvious suction sound. Kinda took some class away if you ask me. The MS unit on the E9x is the opposite of that. It's subtle.

Conclusion:
All in all I'm very pleased; I got a solid 15hp again (now ~431hp!), my engine bay still looks stock, + I have good people to turn to if some issue ever arises.

Thanks EAS and thanks everyone for reading! I can't wait to do part 2 of my NA power mods now and hopefully get way into the upper 300s I'll be sure to write a little something too when I do those!

Dyno vid - excuse the muffled sound, I always end up accidently covering the mic when I record with my phone. Nothing much to see or hear anyways. Stock exhaust.

I can't for the life of me, figure out why people don't dyno the intake alone. That gain could be attributed to just the pulleys.

One of the biggest conspiracies on m3post.

You are very lucky guy. You should be very happy. I had the ms stage 2 w pulley done at eas as well and my car put down 349 peak hp after 4 pulls.

Thanks fellas! Yes I'm very happy with the numbers!

Conditions were favorable IMHO @ only 65-67 degrees ambient temps

Can't remember what the STD #s are. I don't really pay attention to them. SAE is more the benchmark.

StylePoints> What were your peak #s before intake and pullies?

Crank HP:
Before:
= 352.76 / (1.00 - 0.18)
= 352.76 / 0.82
= 430.20

After:
= 366.18 / (1.00 - 0.18)
= 366.18 / 0.82
= 446.56

Think of it this way. If you had 414chp with 18% DT loss, then your whp would be 414 * 0.82. So to get back to chp from whp you reverse the process and divide instead of multiply.

Nice review and data!

When the E46 is all said and done, I can't wait to start pulling more power out of the E90.

What tunes have you been considering?

Sorry, if you're making a point (?) I'm missing it

What does what you dynoed with other parts have to do with MS parts and not trusting them?
