Just asking.
Just look at the brake photos on all the mules and production vehicles as well. They look exactly like M5 calipers.

Well, looks are one thing. I imagine BMW press releases go through all sorts of administrative double-checking.
I hope you are right though!

On the track the problem with the BMW brakes is not the unit itself. I know of many racers that use the stock caliper with good results. The problem is a lack of airflow into the brakes. As a result they get far too hot and fade pads, boil fluid, and wear rotors very quickly.

My last trip to the track in my e46 was to Laguna Seca, its a hard track for brakes. Still I destroyed two sets of front pads and a set of rotors in one weekend. Put new rotors on Friday, another set Monday.

With proper ducting of air to the rotors, they actually hold up very well. Still, I prefer the feel of the AP Racing (front) and Brembo (rear) on my other car.
Based on the front airdam of the E92 M3 I think a LOT of air will be flowing to the brakes. I will be willing to bet BMW will not let us down this time with the M3's braking system. A lot more humble cars come with huge brakes that work (Evos, even the new G37) so I will bet the M3's are exceptional.

The E92 will be a track MONSTER!

They misstated the 8300 vs. 8400 rpm issue as well, which was an error on one of their most important marketing points - the "high speed concept". Why would then not also get this wrong? I guess if I was the M product manager these errors would not slip by me!

I'd be willing to bet they are the brakes right off the M5. Makes a great deal of cost sense from BMWs perspective.

Unsprung weight

You are confusing usprung weight with the rotating mass. The rotating parts (wheels, tires, hubs, bearings and rotors) are part of the unprung weight, along with nonrotating parts (calipers, suspension arms, portions of the shocks, axles, etc.). These latter parts do not directly effect the acceleration or braking capability of the vehicle like the weight of the rotating parts.

E92 M3 brake calipers

This is the best shot I've found of the front calipers (Geneva car), and they do look bigger than the current single pot calipers, especially considering those are 360 mm rotors.

It is really not relavant talking about 1 or 2 pot floating calipers.....the calipers that BMW uses are floating calipers and do quite well with a single piston, assuming the brake pads don't flex.

The piston is on the "inside" of the car.

Caliper count matters with fixes calipers and that's just to ensure there is enough force to keep the full pad in contact with the rotors.

I have always wondered Why BMW didnt up their Piston count in the New M3/M5/M6 just to keep up with the comp and just to better the breaking area!
I know BMW has proven very good with the 1 & 2 Pots and there is a reason why they still use it to this day but I think its getting old and there are better
brake options now! Another member said it good that the Evo 9 had Brembo 4pot breaks and we get 1 pot on the E92 m3 a car thats worth almost 3x's as much? I dont know why BMW didnt upgrade their brakes on the new generation M cars???
At least a 4 pot front and 2 pot rear would have been betting IMHO!

I would really want BMW to take thier brakes to the next level. Not Use similar Brakes that were on the previous model E46 Comp M3's on the E92 M3's! WTF??

E92 M3 brakes !

It seems that the stock M3 brakes are not doing well, It faded after a few hard use and that means not being able to control consistently.

I have no idea why this ancient thread was brought back to light, but it seems like enigma was right on the money with his prediction more than 2 years ago...

Yup, real sharp fellow with tons of BMW and track experience. I wish he was still hanging out here and chatting. I think he got real tired of the the DCT bashers.

There was a thread where we discussed decreased reliability or breakage of parts as track speeds increase. I believe I told him he didn't know what he was talking about and suggested he take his comments elsewhere. There were some derogatory comments on his use of a data logger, also. Might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. Even I noticed he was quite knowledgeable, but the whole discussion deteriorated into a pissing match. Once again, Joe's diplomatic nature shines through.

It would be nice to have his perspective back.
