It may well have been an S8 instead of a regular A8 4.2 but surely the quad pipes would have been a dead give-away, especially to someone who drives an M3 and should know his motors. The idea that it's somehow tuned is something I think you could rule out, almost all chips on offer include the removal of the limiter and a de-limited A8 would be good for 175mph at least.

I think all we have here is the realisation that what we think our cars should do the another and what it actually is capable of is not one and the same.

You would be correct the only X5 that has any go in derv is the 35D which is twin turbo, and that needs chipping, my X6 35D is chipped too 367BHP and can out accelerate the 4.8i, however standard it is crap even with all that torque.
