Insurance is cheaper in SF too, I used to pay less than $800 per year (on the '99 Eclipse), only 3rd party converage though.

oh i've just realized i had never updated this thread. the trip was pretty cool. actually, it was more than just cool, it was freezing. when we left pittsburgh it was -7 F out so when we got to st. louis at night where it was 28 F, we actually thought it was hot. the temperature kept rising as we travelled west but not by much.

my car was ungodly dirty (as you can see from the pics) and still is as i haven't found a good place to wash it yet. but it gave it a special feel being so dirty.

one mistake i made was i loaded the car completely full so even flooring it felt like pulling a semi. my 0-60 must have been well in the double digits. that didn't stop me from opening the car (with V1 as my guardian from evil cops). i did 125mph a few times on straight roads of new mexico and arizona. that was a lot of fun, i've never driven that fast.

even vegas was cold (high 40s) so that sucked. when we got to california, it was like entering a new country. i've been here so many times before but the beauty of the country-side here always stuns me. drove through some nice twisties, amazing hills, fields full of wind power plants, orange trees and grapes.

it's now been almost 4 months since i got here and i must say, california drivers are f-ing crazy. i thought michigan was bad, but this is by far the worst state i've driven in. defensive driving is an unknown term here, this concept of double parking is making me completely insane, people pulling in front of you even when there is almost no space between you and the car in front of you, slow drivers in the left lane, etc. etc. :mad:

here are some pics from the trip. i loved how there was sometimes open road for miles at a time that, if it wasn't for the damn truckers constantly passing each other, put a big smile on my face when i saw how comfortable my E90 felt on it.

all in all, i highly recommend taking a cross-country trip like that at least once in your life. it's a priceless experience, that's for sure.

If not, I used Farmers while I was in SF. They were the cheapest for me...

How's the bumpy ride goes heading into that Meteor Crater ? I remember going through all these crazy bridges made of steel bars with HUGE gaps..probably not there anymore.

As far as crazy drivers, that sounds like NYC and surrounding area drivers to me, so that is probably why when I go to Cali I never notice the way people drive, it just seems normal to me

it actually wasn't bad at all. i looked like they just repaved it. it was kind of narrow but i was still doing around 75-80 in a 50mph zone (iirc). then the speed limit drops significantly as you approach the crater.

i barely saw it from the outside because a huge storm just came out of no where. that sucked ass because i don't think i'll be heading that way anytime soon...

nope, not yet. still using my PA insurance (i know, i know). hopefully, when i get quotes again, it won't be a $6k surprise...
