First, let me state that I have never owned a Porsche, and every time I get in I am reminded of the fact that I am not particularly fond of the interiors or other things about the car. Thus, since I have never owned one, and don't plan on being able to afford the porsche I want for many years, I can't really compare them.
However, I have TREMENDOUS amount of respect for any and all 911s and think that one of these cars is not better than the other. Just like I really like and appreciate 350Z which my buddy owns. Ok, its not an //M, but its a great car in its own right and should be given props. I think a real enthusiast and many of the forum members here appreciate both manufacturers and what each brings to the table. Cheers, e46e92

M3 is far more practical, comfortable, and a better value.
If it's not a DD though and you can afford it, go for the 997S. The current 997S is 15 seconds faster at the 'ring, a difference comparable to e92M3 to e46M3. |

Maybe so for one or two laps, but then it's over. M3 brakes start to fade and the Porsche brakes never let up. That's the real difference.

OK a bit OT, new MkII 997GT3. 3.8litres instead of 3.6litres. 435BHP instead of 415.
0-100kmh: 4.1s Topspeed 312kmh. 997GT3 is king...430Scud is emperor...Macca F1 is God. |

Beautiful car, but IMO the GT2 is better than the GT3. Hands down. Not that I'll be able to afford either

I see the gt3 on a completely different level than the m3- not even comparable in my opinion even though the 'specs' put the cars in the class.

The GT3 is top of the 911 line in my mind, though obviously not the fastest. That red one would do nicely.

Some people just don't get it...... The M3 consistantly out laps the 997 on several different tracks by different drivers...... The 997 S is a better comparo....
Whenever anyone says "I can beat XXX car at my local track"....really means nothing...since the variance in drivers is HUGE.....I've seen miatas CRUSH 997 Turbos on the track.....why....the driver...... I went to a PCA track day two weeks ago in my 20 year old 928.....ran in the 2nd fastest group...guess what.....there was only 1 car out there close to my pace & I'm just a rookie driver.....the GT3's 997 S PDK...Cayman S, Boxster whatever....they all got passed..... I lapped the same track in my M3 a few months back.....the bone stock setup was holding the car back, mostly due to the street tirebrakes and my fear of crashing slowing down the corners....
