I turn it on. There are two long traffic lights on my commute, and I like having the engine shut off while I'm waiting. I can either see the light change or have to wait for the other cars to move, so I have plenty of time to release the brake for the engine to fire back up. The battery will probably get replaced before the warranty is up, so I'm not concerned about that. I'm not always attacking the streets, so some times it's nice to safe a little fuel.

I've use it since owning. However small it is, I'm aware of it's value since we also own a hybrid car (CR-Z). Even fore and aft spirited driving its activated with no performance loss whatsoever. We spend hundreds of hours stopped in a light, bumper-to-bumper traffic or while waiting for fast food during the life of the car and BMW M will not place such feature if it has no value. They did consider m3 owners who thinks it does not belong there by having the option of turning it off. The only disadvantage is you have that millisecond lag when it starts right back up so if you are in a hurry or have an impatient guy in the rear it might be an issue. All I do is restart it earlier by letting go of the break pedal a bit or turning the steering wheel slightly before the green light.

I've been experimenting with it and it does save a bit of gas, but I think only useful if you're sitting in a traffic jam of some kind for long periods of time.
Separately, driving with Power on Normal and keeping revs to 3k or lower per gear, you can save a good bit of gas. I did an average work week with this style of driving plus Start Stop, I was able to save about 60% on gas vs. normal crazy fast driving |

I had it on the F30 and my wife and I hated it so badly now I sold my F30 to an M3 and I found it there I was like no way on this car!!! But thank god you can disable it and the car remembers your settings as oppose to the F30 you have to his the off button every time. I never use this thing on the M3.

I use it only when I know I'm coming up to a long light.
It does save fuel. This is a fact. I can tell the difference in my trip computer when at idle with and without auto/start stop. The only down side is that if you are at stop for too long, the ac starts blowing warm air.

This feature is lame. Especially for the 6MT guys.

I don't use it on the M3 unless I'm in a long drive-thru line. I think people appreciate me not idling with exhaust fumes from the akra. It's perfect for those situations. It's on by default all the time on our X3. Doesn't bother me at all.

I use the feature quite regularly when I can. The "when I can" part was added because the BMW engineers in their infinite wisdom tie start/stop function to the icing/snowflake function (37 degrees F), even with a fully warmed up engine, so that means in Chicago it's basically unusable December to March (even though the highs occasionally get above 37, for typical 8am/6pm commute times, it's rare). Couple that with shutoff of the feature when it's too hot (I think it's somewhere in the 70-80s), I figure I only get 50% usage of the feature.
That said, there's obviously a lot of tech that goes into deciding when it engages, so you don't need to worry about it auto-stopping a cold engine for instance, and the starter has apparently been uprated for the additional usage. Also, this feature has been in use in Europe for far longer than it's been showing up in American cars (other than hybrids), and if it was causing issues, they'd know by now and correct or stop using the feature. The value of auto start/stop definitely depends on your commute. For mostly highway drivers, it's pretty much worthless, but if you have a city commute with some long lights, it will absolutely save some gas. It also seems to be very well integrated with DCT, but might be more annoying with 6MT. It will only stop the engine and stay stopped if you keep your foot on the brake, which makes it easy to alter your behavior based on whether you think you'll be at the light long. If you are, keep braking; if not, you can brake enough to stop your car then take your foot off the brake. In the DCT, the car won't move, and the engine will never stop. Also, if your light is getting "stale", or you see the opposing light turning red, take your foot off the brake, and the car restarts. Even in instances where I haven't "prestarted" the car, it restarts so quickly that I've never had much of a delay from the restart. In short, I find the feature to be very useful at times, albiet limited by what I view as a serious flaw of shutting it off at 37 (I think it could easily be lower, as long as the engine is warmed up), which seriously limits its applicability in colder climates, and probably limits real world fuel savings to far below estimated.

I don't have the feature on my M3 but the X3 loaner i had recently did have this feature and i think it's completely retarded.
What are the actual gas savings? I read like 1mpg? You can easily get that from just changing your driving habits slightly Sure, they say that it's a new starter design and they engineered it so the battery and starter doesn't get damaged.... but what about the rest of the power train? I could be wrong but I don't see how turning something on and off repeatedly can be good.

i don't have it on my 08, but I would def. use it here in the DC metro area where prices are high and there's alot of urban driving.
OP to answer you question, auto start/stop does NOT materially damage the starter or engine. It's a calculated "wear" by BMW engineers. Does start/stop overtime degrade the starter? Of course. Will you be impacted? 98% of time, no. They probably figured, most cars are scrapped by 150k miles. The starter is made to work maybe to at least 190k miles worth of cold/warm starts. (these are just made up numbers) Therefore, you will benefit from the feature without experiencing the downside. The same can be said about all the components of the car. They're all made to last at least 150k without any major overhaul or replacement. So it's the same answer to most similar questions: does pushing the start button degrade the button function? does rowing the gears degrade the transmission? does turning on the lights more often degrade the bulbs? does driving the car wear the tires? does driving the car degrade components of the car? yes, but it'll break after a certain period of time or use, and 98% of us original buyers will NEVER see this point. I know I won't be keeping this car after 120k miles. Finally, OP, if you're really concerned, the major wear on engine occurs during cold starts. You can turn the feature off until your car has completely warmed up, then turn the feature on. That's what I would do. BTW, Road and Track magazine wrote a editorial column on this a few months ago. btw, i'll be happy to get 1-3 mpg per tank. It's savings for not much effort. As someone has estimated, 3-4 tanks savings over the year 4 x $70/tank = $280 savings, that's no chump change.
