One thing I've always noticed is those people who buy the highest end car in a series are kinda ticked off when they see the lower end model which is probably because we paid more for ours and want the exclusivity.

People who own Carrera's are usually going hate Boxters.

People who own a ZR1 are usually gonna hate the regular coupe. (Rightfully so they paid more than double for theirs!)

Personally I would look at it like this. M3=better on the track than the m5/6, yet the m5/6 are much more expensive because of the luxury/prestige that comes with the car. If you are only worried about speed you should look into the mustang 5.0
Or even better the BOSS
I [B]dont[B] have an M3, but I would much rather take the m3 over the 1m. I'd also take the m6 over all of them

BTW NA engines are going, and it is time to accept this. Forced Induction is a keeper for now until the new "efficient" engines come out.

Well I can speak from experience because I've owned all of these Mcars;
E36, E46, Z4Mcoupe, E90, M6 and now awaiting the 1M. I've climbed that ladder chasing the next big thing in the M line up. I've even spent time on the track with the M5/M6/M3 at BMW's driving school in Spartanburg. More expensive and more luxurious does not always translate to more fun. I haven't driven the 1M yet but I'm thinking I will enjoy it more than the M6. Maybe won't turn heads like having a supermodel on your arm but I'm guessing the 1M is gonna be the cute girl next door that will rock your sox in the bedroom!

I have also battled a sense of ambivalence toward the 1M. I suspect I'll feel the same toward the F3x M3. We will always look over our shoulder at the next big thing. How many of us looked at that Motor Trend M3 vs. 5.0 article and felt happy that an inexpensive American muscle car finally matched the M3's German performance and handling? The fact still remains that none of us bought our M3 for strictly the performance. We love this car for the package that it brings - near perfect balance and harmony.

I bought my E90 M3 because I have kids, and the extra doors and interior space fit my needs. If it weren't for the kids, damn right I'd buy that 1M (even though I still don't like that bubble cockpit).

Both the 1M and the M3 are special cars. The M3 has a 25+ year lineage, which means that each generation has an established pedigree. The 1M is a beginning of a legacy, if BMW continues to manufacture it. If it ends with this generation, in years to come, we will be placing this car on the same platform as the E30 M3.

Although I will continue to desire the next M car, and every one currently and previously produced, this only speaks volumes of the allure of everything M. 1M or M3? Yes, please!

I like what you're saying here, but the M3 is also the girl next door, but with a better body, face and personality than your girl.

It's marketing, the next hottest thing...you'll notice the 1M is all about "fun factor" yet the M3 has dispacthed a lot of heavy hitters, RS5, C63amg, Mustange 5.0 - so to me, the 1M is another EVO, WRX/STI - great bang for buck, can give the big dogs a run for their money, but really it's going to take a lot for 1M to jump into a different division/league.

I like them both. If I had a bigger garage and more $$$ I'd love to own both. Since the first 135i hit the U.S. I've enjoyed them -- seems like they'd be great little cars to toss around at the track or a BMWCCA drivers school. Not trading my M3 in for one, though. But hmm if I could own both...

Smaller, lighter, and shorter-wheelbase cars are inherently more fun to drive. It's really not a surprise that so many journalists are saying the 1M coupe is a blast to drive. I found my 135i to be more fun to drive in tight twisty back roads compared to my M3.

I do not think the 1M is bang for your buck. People are paying 55k for them and when you factor in sales tax it will raise it to $60k OTD. That I do not call "bang for your buck".

I'm about to order a e90 M3 with a few options for $61 OTD.

I looked over one tonight. It looks like they tried too hard with the body work and failed under the bonnet with just a mildly tweaked N54 engine.

Would we accept a 335i with a slight tune, arches and LSD as the new M3? Sorry '3 series M'

Yes, it's quite quick, but it should be far better to be considered a true M car

I certainly wouldn't want one

I would be pissed off too @ BMW for stuffing the already small niche between the 335i and the M3.

M3>1M>135i=335is>335i

Why not just bump up the M3 instead? I know you can safely squeeze out 450hp out of the S65 with a few tweaks.

I hope no 335i drivers read your post. If they do, I suggest that you change your name, address and, SSN or just take they safer road and sign up for witness protection program.

Look, here's the deal with the 1M: I'm sure it's a fun little car and a lot of folks are going to be all over it. However, at the end of the day, I would never give up my car for one. It's like going from a 911TT to a Boxster S when they came out in 1999 or whatever. No thanks. M3 FTMFW all day everyday. End of story.

Take the 1m out on the track and repost. The naivete here is palpable.

Its marketing period! Profits in BMW's pocket.

If you look at the company and look at their business model of sustainment and longevity, they want customer loyalty.

Put as many owners into a BMW as possible.

Give them a "taste" of exclusivity with the 1M and they are hooked for life. They will stay with the progression of "M" badge 3,5,6...etc.

Dont go backwards..... Move up!

Cant blame BMW. Pretty damn good long range strategy if you ask me.
