Just checked prices. I am blown away with the amount of stuff you can get for under $900 on an HP (after $300 coupon code) over the entry level Apple laptop:

HP dv7t Quad 2nd generation Intel Quad Core i7-2630QM 2.0 GHz,
8GB RAM, 750GB,
17.3-inch,
Blu-ray

$874.99 + Free Shipping

Add to cart for $1249.99 - $375 off w/Coupon NB6973 (Ends after 560 uses) = $874.99 + Free Shipping
Which is fine if it will always be at home and usually plugged in. The one big incentive to get a mac is battery life and ease of travel. If its for home use than just get a PC. And if it will always be plugged in than get a quad core.

Definitely not what I would have bought. But whatever floats your boat.

Id say you'd be lucky to hit 2hrs battery life with that thing.

Really? My first laptop, so I'm learning as I go.

There was a 9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery (over-sized) - Up to 9.5 hours of battery life available for $21 more, but the thing looked too big. The pic made the laptop tilt by at least an inch.

Anyway, it's mostly staying in the living room. So if I have a wire on it, it's fine by me. I have no intention of taking it to work or travels...

You'll be fine as long as its staying in the same place. Since you've already got a monitor either keep it or get a better one, get your self a BT keyboard/mouse so you dont have to plug/unplug and keep it wired. Hell get a HDMI cable and hook it up to your big screen if it supports HDMI and 1080p. Now you can use it for everything.

he should be fine.. after all it does say that is it rated for 5+hrs.

I have a similar spec Asus and can easily push 5 hours with a 6-cell..

I can bring it into my room and I can hook it up to the charger and 23" LCD monitor, Altec Lansing speakers. I've got BT keyboard and mouse. Network printer. None of which even require hooking up.

Bring it into the living room and stream movies to the PS3, big screen, and home theater speakers without hooking anything up.

Bring it to class or bring it out with me and and do as I please with it.

I dont see a point in the ipad and dont need a desktop.
can't game properly on a Laptop..

I am a big proponent of the desktop experience... but this is entirely untrue. I competed in Cal on counterstrike while using a Laptop. Obviously I used a separate mouse and not a touch pad, but the point is the computer held up very well. This was a decade ago. Now the gap in performance is much smaller.

there is still a huge gap between a top of the line gaming machine and a top of the line laptop for gaming.

you can play on it ofc..
I don't know.. the experience isn't as pleasant
I bought an Alienware laptop, and it was awesome and handled the games very well.. a quick upgrade to my Desktop though and I outperformed the laptop
6months down the line, that laptop couldn't handle new games at max graphics... can't upgrade it.. had to replace it :/

I don't there are any sub-$2,000 laptops right now can run any decent FPS game of the last 2 years at max graphics and still maintain > 30 fps.

To the OP, if I had read this thread earlier, I would have tried to dissuade you from HP computers (laptops or desktop) -- marginal reliability. my experience is that Asus laptops are better all-around.

I bought a 17" Macbook Pro this weekend. It's a beast - it's nearly as fast as my 2008 Mac Pro, at least except for games. I can't say enough good things about it, it's like having my Mac Pro with me on the road.

1) you wont sell ur desktop for more than 200
2) why spend 800+ on a laptop if you only email and surf?
3) you should settle for a 300 - 450 laptop or an ipad
