I am leaning towards the oiled filter. The main issue in the past with getting an oiled filter (for ex on the e46 M3) is that the oil can foul or even permanently damage the MAF sensor. But from what I recall, the e92 does not use a MAF sensor. So I am thinking the oiled filter should not cause any problems, plus I plan on doing my oil changes every 7500 miles.

Do you have any actual pics of the dry filter? The only pics in the pdf file are of the blue oiled unit.

It's brand new. Only limited authorized AFE distributors were informed about this one.

Since you say there is no difference would it not be better to get the regular not the oiled due to less maintenance? You quote the oiled as having more air flow I think that is why most people are choosing it.

Yes, the oiled version does flow better according to AFE, although the dry version is more efficient.

Since the filter is within the engine's air flow requirements, there isn't a hp or tq diff. If the filter is flowing at or near the limit, we may see a little diff between the two filters.

With the dry filter, there is one less step with no oil required.

Sounds interesting but AFE has been known to make outrageous claims in gains, they said their 335 intake gave 27whp!! When dynoed by some members it actually yielded a LOSS in power.

The only thing that could raise any doubt.

It's all propaganda, reality is modifications as small as these barely ever yield gains on any car. Since the M3 is a NA I don't see how the filter would affect gain or loss in power. So the only thing that could happen is gains which is still doubtful. However on the 335, more air means more turbulence throughout the turbines, charge pipes, ic etc where the computer is like wtf!??! so I can see where it can make less power. Same goes for cars like evos, intake system make them slower unless you fine tune the maps/ecu.

I dont expect any gains from this things but would like to here a bigger GRUNT from the engine under WOT haha

I am going to wait until after some independent dyno results on deciding whether to purchase or not.

And if no power gain then either stock ftmfw or wait around for someone to sell their Gruppe M.

Friday is the first day in the 5-12 business days AFE promised. In reality, AFE still has 7 more business days to ship the product.

For the price the distributor is selling the filter, it really doesn't need that much consideration. If you have opened up your intake to look at the stock filter it is enormous, and looks very restrictive. A flow increase of 50~80% is pretty significant for such a low cost upgrade. The benefits such as increased flow may just add a few HP, for a simple upgrade like this it's worth it in my book. Pencilgeek stated it in his post, the HP increase that he saw might have been attributed to the high flow of the K&N that was installed rather than the design of the airbox itself. It still needs to be dynoed to verify but it makes sense.

I highly doubt a filter is going to make you lose hp unless it is more restrictive than the stock filter. The AWE intake on the e46 M3 was probably the best intake available for that car, yielding more hp than the K&N and Gruppe M.
