Exclamation M3 M-DCT Transmission Help Please (For Insurance)

Hello everyone, I've just bought a 2010 E92 Dakar Edition with M-DCT and I'm going through the motions with insurance at the moment. Whenever I enter the vehicle registration, the insurers automatically class the vehicle as a 'Manual' transmission vehicle.

If I manually change this to 'Automatic' it adds a couple of hundred £ to the quotes, but there isn't obviously an option for 'Dual Transmission' etc.

I've read up on various sites, and they actually class the vehicle as Manual primarily.

What is the general concensus on here for insurance purposes and what has everyone classed their M-DCT M3 as with their insurers?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Has to be classed as an Automatic in that case then. Think about it, it's a COST OPTION on the car, thats the reason the premium goes up when you select Automatic.

A manual is in every sense of the word the traditional stick shift transmission.

Thanks for the response, Totti ... Although not the one I was wanting to hear

I've read up on a few websites, and they specifically class a Dual Clutch transmission as a Manual with automatic capabilities though, that's why.

Also, I know it's a cost option on the vehicle at manufacture, but 'Transmission Changes' is usually an item where this can be identified as a 'Modification' to the standard vehicle with an insurer. By doing that, it doesn't add much to the premium.

I must have done the comparison websites 100 times now and every time I get a different answer.

I wonder what BMW's take on it is? Manual or Automatic? Obviously I don't want to have any problems if the worst comes to the worse!

Give Liverpool Victoria a ring...they are pretty good with insurance for my M3.
On my V5 my DCT m3 is listed as "M3 Semi auto".

Cheers for the replies. I am indeed in the UK. I'll give LV a reply.

Perhaps I'm just cynical but no doubt either way I can't win. Put Auto and the insurers will class it as a manual, put Manual and they'll class it as an auro - Anything to muddy the waters no doubt ...

Anyway, I pick it up tomorrow on BMW complimetary 7 day so I'm looking forward to it.

Yep, in the event of an accident, and the insurance co sends their representative to look at the car, they will see on the gear lever:

P, D, N, R and assume it is an auto (which it is).

It would take a huge amount of explaining to try to prove that something which automatically shifts gears for you is a manual.

END.

I've just parted company with LV, because of selling my M3, they were the cheapest and UK call centre based, they do insist on some sort of tracker though.

Cheers mrad01 - That's that then - quite comprehensive in the view! ...

LV won't insure me FFS ...

Creepy - I have got a fitted - Trackstar - but they said due to the vehicle they can't provide cover ...

In the UK what counts is what is listed on the vehicles V5 document.
When you give the insurer your cars registration number they "look up" the car on the DVLAs database and go with what is listed there.
IIRC the E46 M3 with SMG was listed as a manual on my V5.

Ouch...maybe its your age/too many points?
I know of a few E9x M3 owners who are insured with LV...I only renewed mine a couple of months ago @£630.

29 Years old, full clean license so I'm unsure.

Perhaps I should ring the dealer and ask them what's on the V5 Log book?

Where's the P?

...and to the OP, BMW considers it a manual gearbox, and that's how it's insured on this side of the pond (for everyone I know with one, including me).

When I enter my registration, my DCT comes up as manual on all the insurance websites. But they are getting this information from the DVLA, so I take it as correct and don't change this value, after all the car can be driven in manual mode. If an assessor wanted to be funny about it, then there would have to be a debate about what makes a car 'manual'... if I am changing the gears, that to me sounds like manual.

For reference, this year I'm insured with Aviva last year was Admiral. Both years I've paid £460 fully comp protected.

I am confused why the OP can't just do this then?

Makes some sense since SMG II was just a standard off-the-shelf manual trans with a pseudo-sequential UI bolted up.

If they class the DCT as a manual, well, then they are doomed to a confounded mess I'd say. What's the VW Polo/Golf S-tronic or Ford Focus/Fiesta Powershift called over there? Please don't tell me they are calling these things manual transmissions.

I'd be very hesitant to put the DCT in the same class as those transmissions... They were very obviously autos designed to offer more shift control, which is not the case with the DCT.

Highly disagree. They were developed to do both manual and automatic shifting equally well.

Cheers for all the replies ... I spoke to the guy at BMW and he's text me a picture of the log book and it's classed as an 'M3 Dakar S-A' which he classes as a Sequential Automatic. He also HPI'd the vehicle and it came back Automatic.

I know there's arguments for and against, but I thought it best to stick with this, despite the increase in cost.

Anyway, I've insured it now - a little more than I was hoping to pay, but I wanted to pay monthly. Just looking forward to driving it off the forecourt tomorrow morning, probably using the manual transmission ...

Thanks again for the help.
