Purpose of intake hood vent for sound?

So nobody really knows what the purpose of the hood vent is in regards to the intake. I have my own thoughts and people have speculated but I was thinking the other day whether it is not simply to provide more intake sound by opening that up? The intake sound surely would be a bit more muffled without that direct opening and it does it in a way to avoid a big open intake under the hood and avoids heat soak. I am sure it adds some extra air sourcing but did they need 3 intake paths just for air? Probably not and I am guessing that one was primarly for sound
