Tunes: ESS vs. Active Autowerkes vs. Gintani

Which tunes are the best? I'm thinking of getting an axle back system (might move to a fully system in a year or two)

What does everyone think?

Tuning is about balance of power and handling for the driver not just peak horsepower. Throttle response as well as torque, mid range, top end is addressed because no one drives at full throttle at all times. Here at Active we understand what makes driving fun and exciting and only want to enhance the total driving experience of our customer whether on the street or on the track.

Shoot me an email at rwelsh@activeautowerke.com for more info

Everyone will say their tune is the best...

As far as Im concerned I pulled in a tad over 400 WHP with my mods using a Dynapack(wheel hub Dyno) and Pencilgeeks gear and ratio. If you look at his thread you will see this is actually a really good number to pull.

As far as real world experience... Im not much of a drag racer to tell you amazing quarter mile times but I can tell you I easilly beat my friend on a roll on from about 80 klicks to 200 klicks in his C63 AMG (stock). I took about 2 1/2 to 3 cars.

*edit to add* missing from my sig is the AA Pulley.

Personally, I think they are all "good". I have the Powerchip tune and am happy with it. It think it all comes down the price really....IMHO, the tunes are all "about the same" in terms of HP, etc.

They are not all good !
And as a MOD it's not good/wise of you to give that advise !
To the OP if you do search you'll find every tuner has had problems with their tunes and offer even more crapy so called updates fixing their tunes (excluding ESS ) .
With ESS you won't hear these lame storys , the tuner of ESS is apart of ESS not hired as an outside tuner like everyone else's ! There for ESS has no one to blame but themselves if you have a problem ( which I highlyyyyyyyy doubt)
And it's pretty impressive when you'll find that their tunes are flawless ( you can sleep at night and not worry about your 80k investment ) ...
Oh yeah you'll find that people say they inflate their numbers which is bull crap considering every dyne acts and gives different results .
More importantly you have a SAFE RELIABLE tune that won't jeopardize your car !

Happy tuning

Happy tuning
I find AA to be very conservative. They initially launched a tune that was conservative and the 1.5 wasn't to fix problems from v1 but to pull out more power after more time with the car.

I never had a problem with the car at all and was happy to get an email letting me know that the 1.5 pulled out more power and they also had a cat delete option for even more power.

Some tuning companies would have charged for the added tune. All AA customers got the upgrade free.

You might want to consider Dinan as well.
Conservative tune, but generally considered safe.

OP.... I had the Dinan tune with Dinan rear exhaust and Dinan 3.62 diff before I installed the S/C. The tune delivered the numbers Dinan claims and my butt dyno loved the added power. I don't have any experience with another company's tune on a non-S/C E9x M3.

A few of my friends have gotten dyno tunes at OE Tuning/Gintani and have no regrets.
In all honesty, I can speak very positively on their behalf, however I do not want to sound bias. I am sure you would like other offerings as well, but remember, in any case with any tuner a dyno tune will always yield better gains than an "off the shelf" tune.
