Considering coming back to the E92

Previously this summer I had a 2012 M3 competition package in Frozen Silver. I enjoyed the car a fair bit, but the upkeep required with frozen paint in my environment was... Enough to make me sell it.

Fast forward a bit, I am driving a 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG P31 with headers, tuning and airboxes, making 488RWHP/451RWTQ. Absolute blast in a straight line, and makes noises reserved for the devil himself. But its absolute crap on a nice road, and being that 285 is the maximum rear tire, it doesn't know how to hook to save it's life.

My M3 left the largest impression on me of any car I've owned, and spending christmas in AZ I was driving an E46 M3 (the one from the VividRacing video for Status Gruppe exhaust, a friend owns it), and it really started a flame in me.

Previously, I had been thinking of buying an F10 M5, but I've been around them and they aren't for me. I'd also be interested in an M4, but not until they have been out for a few years. And truth be told, I'm more of a V8 guy.

Am I crazy for wanting to sell the C63 and buy another M3? Especially since I'd probably SC the M3. Has anyone else done this move? I guess it also doesn't help that I work for a BMW performance shop.

You only live once, so I say do what makes you happy. If that means getting another E9X M3, then go for it. Do you have any videos of your C63 exhaust? I'm curious to know how the exhaust and induction noise sounds on those bad boys.

Supercharging the M3 will bring you back to grip issues in the higher RPM's, but it's totally worth it.

My life is grip issues at all RPM's haha... I can break free in 4th no problem.

The other videos on my channel are all exhaust on it, as well.

We have a customer with a Dinan stroked E90 M3, and I'd totally do that... If it wasn't so insanely expensive for the gains.

Heres one of my rear summer tires after 5000km

Heh I came from the 63 to e92. Sec cat and reso delete, tune, and kw v3. You're right with the noise and straight line. It's insane.

But... also like you my issue was rear tire fitment and handling. Overall the e92 is a much better package for what I'm looking for and I think youd agree especially with a supercharger

I go through cars like a lot of guys here. If you know one you like and want, go get it and stick with it for a couple of years. I am in my second year with my E93. Longest of the last 4 cars.....

You have to hear one on headers! It's a whole new level of crazy.

Well, I did drive one for a month or so, and it was... Heaven on earth. The only thing I didn't agree with is the torque. I DD my cars, which means city traffic. When I got my M3 I came from a modded 335i, and was a bit depressed when I tried to merge and fell short. I also wasn't used to revving an engine up so high, my mind instinctively told me to shift at 6800 because it thought I would blow my motor. My C63 is tuned to rev to 7500, so another 1100RPM on a tune isn't so wild.

I also think the E92 is a much better looking car. The C63 is nice, but the rear end is right off a C300, it looks odd. The E92 with a fat set of tires is so hot.

Longest I've owned a car is just shy of a year. After my M3 I had a 2014 Audi S4 for... 2 months. It sucked.

Well, I did promise my wife two years with this one, but I would keep it anyway. 2 months! You must have taken a beating on that one.

Meh, I traded it for the C63 (which was basically new, no miles on it, and fully loaded). The guy's wife said he needed to get rid of it because it was scaring his kids. With all the stuff he threw in (car cover, tires, his pass for an AMG driving course), I basically broke even. His wife is incredibly happy with the S4... He is not.

I've noticed women dislike the C63. My ex girlfriend yelled at me for downshifting beside a cyclist (honest mistake) and making him fall of his bike.

I had a built M6 that made people jump when I downshifted so I know what you mean. So much fun though! E92s are the total package though and there are plenty of mods available of course, as you know.

I was driving down to Banff with a built E60 M5, and my exhaust completely drowned him out. Couldn't even here the poor thing!

I'm just happy M3 mods are cheaper (somehow???). To SC a C63 it costs about 30k with all supporting mods (but 1200hp is achievable, saw a few of those at SEMA). A set of headers was 3800 alone. I used to have akrapovic slip-ons too (sound TERRIBLE on the 63) and they were almost 5k....

Is there a way to tune E92's for backfires? My C63 lets out some nasty shotgun blasts when it's overrun, or even if I let off the gas over 3000RPM. It's a thing of beauty.

I actually almost bought one of those, there was a 2008 (I think) new old stock (90km on it...) for sale last year, but the cost of upkeep/modding a V10 scares me. Especially when my V10 R8 owning friends tell me they spent like 20k on headers.

One major gripe I have to share with all you DCT owners, the C63 is an automatic. When you pull the paddle... 3 seconds later she shifts. Coming from DCT and DSG cars I kept pinging off my redline trying to shift. I miss instant shifting, and the amazing sound downshifting an M3 makes. The C63 does revmatch and blip, but it's not the same.

Does anyone here winter drive an E92? Are they decent? My C63 is on studded winters, and even then it's not amazing.

That is why I got rid of mine. Love the car, but got scared off after a while from seeing the repair costs and I didn't have any warranty. Had Schrick cams, headers, Dinan exhaust, eibach springs, tune, pulley, etc. a true beast.

I drive my E93 all year. With good tires it does fine. I can break the rear end loose if I want, but it always comes right back.

Ausgezeichnet!

We have been experimenting with tuning to cause burbles, sofar it's not panned out, though we have completely changed the exhaust tone of the engine.

Yeah to me the looks on m3 is what takes the cake. But also I do have to say every time I see a 63 on the road it is a damn good looking sedan

Lol I forgot to mention that too. The slush box is absolutely horrible. Lol I was showing the car to a potential buyer at the time and forgot about the lag and bounced it off the red line. Suffice to say he wasn't impressed lol

I went for the dct and my god is it glorious. So.etimes I do miss manual but at the end of the day especially after the dct tune... man you just can't beat the lightening shifts of a dounce clutch

Hahaha... A saw a guy in a 335 hard top vert that had his roof stuck half open in winter... BMW wasn't kidding when they listed an operational temperature range.

I'd get one if they made a CF vert roof. I miss the CF roof so much from my old M.

They are somewhat hard to discern from a regular C sport package from most angles. I've seen way too many C300's with AMG quad exhaust, still sounds good surprisingly.

Guess that guy didn't know how to manually close it. Yeah, a CF roof would be sweet.

I would've loved to have this! It has to be easier than a dark color to maintain, no?

The e92 M3 is better looking than the c63 to me too. Go shopping but stay away from a dark color.
