Thanks for this thread. I was having the exact same problem. I took my car to the dealer this week and they replaced the fuel tank vent valve. I'm optimistic this will solve the issue, but I'll update if it doesn't.
There's another strange fuel tank behavior that I'm hopeful this will fix. I've noticed sometimes when fueling up the gas pump's automatic cutoff kicks in before the tank is full, maybe about 3/4 full. And if I keep pumping, it cuts off after a few more tenths of a gallon, over and over, until I give up because I'm too nervous I'll overfill and spill gas everywhere. I once read someone thought it had to do with excess fuel vapor in the tank. Well, if the fuel tank vent valve was not good, then maybe this is another symptom. Hopefully this goes away too. |

Just as a data point, I never had an issue with premature... But seriously, never had the fuel pump shut off early as drink schlitz describes. Just the erratic idle with occasional stall.

I had this for a few months, I may have fixed it with a bottle if techron, and a spirited drive (200+ mile road trip). Haven't had the issue since the fillup & techron bottle.

No premature shutoff, and no rough idle. Though this was not a good test of the rough idle problem, because after filling up I drove across the parking lot to the grocery store and parked for about an hour. Then on the way home I didn't have to stop. |

My 08e90 had been doing this for about 80k miles...on fill up you get rough idle , mash the gas and by the next stop light it's fixed ...at 156k now running strong

Open Road BMW in Edison told me this was normal, as soon as I asked them about it.
They didn't even look into it.

I hope I'm stating the obvious, but this is NOT normal. BMW engineers did NOT design this "feature" into their M3. <sigh>

We just need to work the details. I travel a lot so give me some dates and where you are going to do it so I can see if I am available.

I had the same problem after fill up and stalled several times while stopped at a light. So, based on a recommendation from this thread, I decided to not completely fill up until I could replace the Fuel Purge Valve. Now I have filled up twice since replacing the valve without the problem returning (fingers crossed).
I used this DIY to remove the intake plenum in order to get to the Fuel Purge Valve: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...ht=actuator%27 From there, it was pretty straight forward. Thank you everyone for helping diagnose this issue! Mike Quote:

Well, I can tell you that this particular weird issue, is NOT just for the M3. I have exactly the SAME issue happen mostly every time I fill up my 2004 X3, so it is definitely a BMW issue, but not necessarily an M3 exclusive one....

I had the same problem. After paying $165.00 for diagnostics, the tech found nothing wrong. No codes. However, he told the SA that I may have engaged the Auto-Stop system.

I had similar thing happen to me last week, I figured it was due to a bad batch of fuel. I ran that tank down and refilled elsewhere, and I also changed out the air filter (since I didn't know when it was changed last under the previous owner, and the filter was a bit dirty, warranting a replacement either way), and haven't had any other odd rpm drops at idle since. I first thought I hit the auto stop somehow, the auto stop wouldn't cause for the weird rpms at idle, and I don't even use that "feature" either way.

^ Keep an eye on it! My issue was sporadic and did not occur with every fill up. It did start to occur more frequently over time but initially it could be months before it happened again...

My issue came back with a vengeance after 3 weeks and caused misfires and limp mode, increased emission on every startup. It was traced back to a failing O2 sensor. I pulled an O2 sensor code once a few weeks ago but that code never came back, My independent mechanic and I swapped the O2 sensor originally but it may of been a fault sensor out of the box or we didn't reset the sensors correctly. We were looking at idle control valves, strips, and throttle actuators, to which we found nothing wrong. After my mechanic and I failed to figure it out I took it to the dealer which is when it got bad enough to throw O2 sensor and O2 adjustment limit error code that the O2 sensor was revisited. after replacing the primary O2 sensor on bank 2 and resetting the O2 sensor adjustment the problem was solved.

Big thanks to GPitts and KSCarrol !
Wanted to post a public thank you to GPitts and KSCarrol for their helping me with this. I had the rough idle after fill-ups and my dealer had no idea what was wrong. I showed them GPitts workflow paperwork and they went straight to the "Fuel Tank Breather Valve" BMW part # 13907838281 (here at ECS). Rough idle after fill-ups are now entirely gone after just one dealership visit and without the back and forth of multiple visits changing out parts that aren't broken.
