09 AW E92 - Oil issues
Guys,
just joined the M family earlier this week with an 09 AW E92 CPO with 46K miles. Car looks new cosmetically and rides like new. you really appreciate that engine once you push it a little. Anyway - i had the dealer I bought it from do all the service and top off the oil which was low when it first came back off lease from the ogirinal owner an di put about 150 miles on it since. The oil level was back to low yesterday and the dealer told me this is normal to add 1 -2 quarts every three months espcially in the heat. Does anyone else have this issue or should i bring it in to get checked? Here she is below before picking her up at the dealer: |

yes my car uses oil like gasoline; approx 1 qt every 1200-1500 miles. I think using oil is fine; but my car seems a little much, but per BMW 1 qt every 900 miles is the threshold (which IMO is crazy)

I have owned a '95, '03 and '08 versions. The 95 and 03 did not burn any oil, but the 08 burns some, (5,000+ or so). I do have a problem with the oil level sensor and plan on replacing it at the next oil change. I doubt that your car burns a quart within 150 miles or so with no indications, smoke, leaks, etc.
I had an advantage of driving 50K plus miles and establishing a history so that when I started getting low levels and eratic readings, we are sure the sensor is bad. Regardless, congratulations on a terrific car and good luck with this issue. John |

OP, how much did they actually put in when you took it to the dealer? 1/2-1qt every few thousand miles is normal. |

i kept track of mileage for the first few quart then figured "screw it" ... and just always have two quarts at home PS...driving habits play a role too...

1Q every 1-2K miles is crazy. You really need to do some record keeping and keep a close eye on this. I did a very slow break in (more than what BMW says) and after 23K miles I burn 1L every 7,500 miles.

i wouldnt think the oil burning would have anything to do with how you break it in???

My 09 E92 does not use oil. I am tracking it now, so this may change, but for normal street driving, no oil issue(s) at all

Depending on how well you broke in the car seems to determine the level of oil that gets burned off it seems. This is speculation of course but I did start noticing a pattern.
I had my oil changed 2,000 miles ago. Since then it has not once dropped a single dot on my idrive sensor or on the dashboard. It is still right on the full line. I have never needed to add oil between my 7500 mile change. But I strictly followed the break-in procedure the first 1500 miles or so. |

I've never had to add oil. Changed the oil at 1200, 8000, 15000 miles. I did take the engine a bit over 5500rpms during breakin...I was on the autobahn. Couldn't help it.
I think if you are NOT taking the car to redline frequently then you will burn oil. Because there are very few trips where I don't spin it it to 8k.
