If you are trying to break into the Financial Sector definitely stay at Brown University. Your job placement will be much higher than at USC.. Large Investment Firms mostly recruit from Ivy's.... you are in a great position right now, don't blow it over friends or parties or social events... I'm not saying you can't have fun, but make going to school, getting good grades a priority. I was once in the same position as you are in now... I chose the school, got the grades, lost some friends, but hey.. I got the job I wanted and doing pretty well for myself now..

Good luck with your decisions!

This was the most useful post so far! thank you for sharing your experience.

I am going to finish my transfer app right now, and at the end of the year, I will decide whether or not to go through with it...

This may just happen to coincide with my graduation... who knows? If not, I will actually USE my engineering degree for engineering lol

BTW, the thing about the girls/parties probably ranks lower on my list than even the e90post opinion as far as my ultimate decision is concerned...

Any ways, I appreciate all of your input!

Haha it's funny! I have a BS in mechanical engineering too but went for a second undergrad in biz anyways

The problem with the financial sector is that it had overgrown its means and the market's need. The economy will rebound for sure but I highly doubt that there will be as many positions to fill and as much money to spend in the financial sector as we'd seen in recent year. Also, the firms will be very cautious and conservative after this "wake up call".

I was planning to send out applications for MBA school next fall but now I am thinking perhaps a JD will be more vluable in the long run.

That's kind of why I picked mech. for my major, even if there are no great finance jobs available, there are always new positions for us engineers! I guess I will just have to wait and see...

Brown is an entry level Ivy. It's not like Harvard, Princeton or Yale, so go ahead and transfer to USC. Are you doing an Arts degree at Brown or something? If so, Brown has a lot more prestige than USC. If you're going for prestige, then stay.

Sure, if you have low self esteem, then going to a prestige Ivy League school will help your self worth.

cornell used to be the school that smart kids would go to that couldn't get into Brown because they partied too much... I think Brown has a lot of very rich students and alumi.

true...

THESE PEOPLE ARE JUST ON MY FLOOR:

-Spielberg's daughter
-Jack Nicholson's daughter
-the grandson of the Yaegermeister/Grey Goose owner (worth ~$3B of which $100M was donated to Brown)
-son of a hedge-fund manager (I dont remember which one)

most of the kids I went to high school with are much smarter than some of the people I have met here...

just push yourself harder unless you really want to be back in cali then I would suggest UCLA but remember that the companies you want to work for have schools that for whatever reason hold weight.

my impression of USC bears out the "univ of spoiled children" phrase--it's an expensive private school that doesn't have a very rigorous program (at least in engineering).

FWIW, i was a civil engineer in undergrad, but post MBA, have worked in consulting and corp strat.

i would suggest staying at brown, not only for the recruiting options, but also for the alumni network once you leave. i think outside of cali, brown would have a stronger alumni network than usc (usc is pretty strong in so cal). all my jobs have come via alumni networks (it can get your foot in the door, but after that, its up to you)

in terms of recruiting, investment and consulting firms would be easier to get into from brown. i'm sure mckinsey, bain, etc recruit from there. even if you don't want to spend a career at such places, or an investment bank, 2-4 years of that can usually give you the flexibility to goto a lot of different places.

If so, you haven't been there long enough to get the full experience.

Stick it out for at least a year if not two and then make you decision when you have some more experience.

Plus, the hottness of the chicks should not even be a factor in your decision.
+1...but the family wealth of chicks may be...much more family money in an Ivy...plus waaaaay better job prospects...

if you are something special...you'll find the one or two hot chicks at your school...if you are just average...you may need to be in the big ocean of USC...

if they were really rich then they could probably buy there way into Harvard or maybe Brown but they might not do so well at an Ivy league school. I heard Harvard wasn't that great for undergrad because they have a lot of students teaching.

I have two cousins who went to Harvard in the last few years. Both hated it, one ended up transferring to Princeton in sophomore year (which she loved) and the other just got to UPenn this fall and wishes he transferred sooner...

I'm not at school here just to meet rich girls...
