WOW When did I get old?
If you are 30 or older, you will think this is hilarious!!!!)
TO THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD: When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking 25 miles to school every morning ... in the snow, uphill, BOTH ways -- yadda, yadda, yadda. And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids -- about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it! But now that I'm over the ripe old age of 30, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid, we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the stupid library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!! And if you didn't have the exact title or author, you were screwed. You couldn't just 'google' some keywords! There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the local record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and mess it all up! We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal. Tough cookies! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your doctor, your preacher, a collections agent -- you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister! No one had a cell phone -- not even your parents! If you were gonna be late, you'd better have a dime in your shoe to call home and tell someone or the cops would be out forming a search party! Our cars didn't have cup holders. You held your drink between your legs and prayed that dad didn't swerve or hit a bump, in which case you would be hearing 'You pee'd your pants' the rest of the day. There was no DVD player in the backseat either. You played games like 'Out of State License Plate' or, my personal favorite, 'Slug Bug' to occupy your minds. We didn't have Ebay or Craigs List. If you wanted to get rid of something, you had to have a yard sale. You had to put your item in front of your house, for all your neighbors and friends to see (along with your sister's pee-stained mattress, your mom's bent-to-hell Tupperware with no lids, and your brother's old undies), and proclaim the price you wanted! And ... it was first come, first served! No bidding to get a higher price. We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Pong. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or screens; it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE! When you went to the movie theater, there was no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed! Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no on-screen menu and definitely no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little brats! We didn't have DVR's or VCR's - If you wanted to watch a show you had to wait for it to be on. And if you missed it or were late you simply missed it. There was no "recording" it or watching it later. Also if you wanted to watch a movie you actually had to go to the Movie t-h-e-a-t-e-r. You couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD or even on VCR because those things didn't exist yet. If you were lucky in a few years your movie might actually make it to channel 7 - edited of course for violence, language and time. And we didn't have microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove or go build a frigging fire. Imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot. That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980! |

sometimes I have to remind myself that im now 31. I still feel like the same kid only now I have all this stuff to play with...oh yeah..and I have to work, take care of the baby,be a husband, pay a mortgage, and all that wonderful stuff that comes with getting older. I still say "theres just gonna be a bunch of adults there" if Im going to a party thats gonna be boring. I guess Im now one of those "adults". oh well, im having fun.

More like... you don't know what you are missing. Driving a TRUE manual with no intrusive electronics....

I guess my complaint is when a car is manual-only. It will be nice to see when "old-school" manuals phase out and "new-school" manuals become the norm. Technology ftw. "Old School" manuals are too archaic and ancient. |

Plus, why do you care if they phase out if you don't drive them? I would not buy a GTR for the simple fact that it has no manual option

Dude, all of it was good, but I totally forgot about the TV guide thing. I used to buy that crap just to know when shows were on. Nowadays you just click the "guide" button on your remote and there you have it. So funny.

You need to step back and look at the other side as well. Think of all the things younger people have to deal with that you didn't. If I really cared I could write the antithesis to this, but I don't.

Now I know I'm getting older, because I read that and the first thought which popped into my head was "gimmie a break" (which incidentally is probably a show you kiddies have never heard of).

Ha ha ha, fun reading. I actually think that entertainment systems are a gift from the Heavens. I remember the "Are we there yet" comments when I was a kid on long drives and my parents must have been fuming and wanted to strangle us. Now the kids can be entertained for hours without pestering the driver.
