Ahh....if you are talking about the slight rattle at idle with the clutch out..that's normal. Its in the manual.

yup i have it too, when the car is warmed up and at idle it has a rattle noise, soon as you push the clutch in it goes away. i was told it was normal. i orig thought it was the throw out bearing but when i had it checked out the techs told me it was normal noise for this car

I had to buy a lightweight flywheel to experience this in the E36 M3. Now it comes standard.

There are 2 noises that are characteristics of the manual transmission.
1- clutching in and out - produces a small rattle (detailed in the owners manual) 2 - in neutral at idle there is a continuous small knocking noise like 'dakadaka' (reminds me a little of the sound that Harley Davidson Bike's make) this stops when 1st gear is engaged. I spent the last 2 weeks discussing these with a very senior tech when I had a new clutch and flywheel fitted. |

Google "clutch chatter"
Pretty typical on motorcycles, at least the ones I've owned, and my current CB599. Present sound on my M3, but not concerned.

Wanted to revive this thread and see how everyone's car is doing with the trans rattle. I just picked up an 08 with 12k miles and was very surprised to hear the trans rattle that everyone is reporting as "normal." What concerns me is this sound is identical to the trans rattle I get in my 88M5 that has a sport trans (G280). This sound among early model M5 guys is infamous and well documented. The rolling noise is from the input shaft bearing failing.., and the clacking noise is from the lay-shaft for 5th gear. I've heard the e90 6 speed trans has a similar layout.
So, what concerns me is that over time, say after 80-100k miles, this noise starts to get really bad. Bad enough to be heard by the car next to you while in stop and go traffic. If I can hear this noise at 12k.., what's it gonna sound like at 50k ? I wonder if I sat in a new e90 would i still hear the trans noise ? |

The first is flywheel chatter. This is more common in 08's because of the lighter flywheel. You will notice it when in neutral with the clutch out. It sounds like rocks grinding around in the tranny, gets worse as the fluid warms up. This noise is completely normal. The second is the rattling noise when engaging and disengaging the clutch in 1st gear at lower speeds. I notice it most when going up the curb into my driveway. It really doesn't sound good but it is noted in the owners manual so I guess we have to live with it...

I also get the rattling noise when I complete my shifts into 2 and 3 gear. Is that normal as well??
The sound is similar to what others are describing as a rock grinding the tranny. |
