OEM Carbon Fiber Spoiler, Port Install

I have a M3 coupe on order that is currently waiting for production date (status 111, order accepted). I have opted for no factory rear spoiler. Instead I'll be going with the OEM carbon fiber version. Not sure if I want to go with the port installed or local tuning shop. If port installed, does the request need to be submitted prior to production lock (I forget the name once it moves from order acceptance).

For reference, I have ordered a M3 coupe in M.R. w/ black interior. It will have the carbon roof and black kidney grilles. After multiple cars in black, grey and (one) white, I needed a change. Touch decision for me between Le Mans Blue and M.R.

if i were u'd get the oem small rear spoiler anyways, u can always remove it when you add on the oem cf spoiler and then sell it. a bit of work but still can sell it for some change

I had mine installed at the port. It wasn't that much more expensive than what you can order the spoiler for online so it was worth it for me. Pretty sure you can order port installed accessories right up until the car arrives at the port.

I'd say purchase it yourself then have your dealer install it after delivery.

Get it done at the port. Why get your car only to have to drop it off at some tuning shop later. Your car could arrive with it installed. That's how I'm doing my M Performance Exhaust.

agree, likely they may do it for free if you twist their arm a bit. You did buy a 70k+ car from them, the least they can do is either throw in M3 floormats or 20 minutes of labor to install your spoiler for you. I'd say see if they'll do the kidneys too!

The only thing I would be worried about is that the dealer/port will install the spoiler with factory adhesive.

From what I understand, it's nearly impossible to take off the spoiler with this stuff applied. I much rather install it with 3M adhesive tape, so that if the spoiler gets damaged, it's easy to replace.

Consider modifying the order/adding the spoiler delete option to avoid the need to take off the oem on arrival. There is an order code for it. It can be a pain to remove it - get off all the foam and glue - and it takes time and you need to be careful. Not that hard a DIY - yes you can use 3m tape or the BMW Betalink glue. The Betalink is nearly impossible to remove without paint damage-it is the recomended solution and looks the best IMO. The tape can release if the car and spoiler are not properly cleaned - I have seen some poor tape jobs as well as some pretty good ones. You will save a few benjamins if you order it online and install it yourself. IMO I would opt for the Betalink - runs about $25 - others will opt for the tape as it can be removed - with care.

Firstly, it is real carbon fiber so it is extremely durable. I really wouldn't worry about damage. Secondly, the actual contact area of the mounting surface is a lot less than you might expect. I would be very weary of using tape. Tape can work on the front splitters because you have a larger mounting surface. Still, the betalink allows for the best and tightest application.

I did my install myself and I used betalink adhesive for both rear spolier and front splitters. The install was spot on. Very tight and clean.

I don't think that there's any danger in using the tape. The little OEM spoiler from the factory is applied with tape and I never heard of any problems with them.

Although I agree the betalink probably gives a tighter fit, my install with the 3M turned out great. With the spoiler install, the amount of surface area for the tape was pretty big. Pretty much the length of the spoiler.

Did you find that the spoiler was sufficiently pressed down to the trunk, or does it look somewhat raised ?

Thank you all who responded to my question. While I agree that it is an easy DIY, most likely I will go with port install. After thinking about it, I like the idea of receiving my (new) car ready to go. There will be plenty of other mods for me to tackle (just a question of time and budget).

One thing about having it installed at the port. I had mine done that way and they ended up sanding my trunk down where the glue would hold the spoiler. This is a huge issue if you ever wanted to remove the spoiler for whatever reason. When I removed mine, I had to get my whole trunk repainted because they did this. I'd say get it done after.
