Trade my 08 E92 M3 for a 997 Carrera S?

Lately I've been feeling like I want to do something different. I freaking change cars like socks and every year I'm jumping in something new. Been throwing around the idea of picking up a 911 Carrera S. What say you BMW forum?

I know i know this is a bmw forum but I'm sure many ppl here have either had one or the other and might have some input.

I am very much like you in that i am in and out of cars annually. I owned a 997.1 S and found it to be a fabulous car but would not say it's infinitely better than the E92 M3. Different cars with different driving characteristics. Power wise they are pretty equal. Better feedback in the Porsche but I found the M3 to feel more stable at higher speeds (probably weight). After selling my E92m3 I bought a 997 Turbo and obviously there certainly is a big difference between it and the M3. If j were you, I'd look at 997.2S if you want to go the Porsche route. The only 997.1 I'd look at is the turbo or the GT3. I absolutely love my 997 Turbo and so glad i bought it.......i just wish I could have been able to keep my M3 to use as my DD. It really is a fantastic car.

997.1 (except for Turbo or GTS) uses an IMS which is prone to failure. Read up before you pull the trigger on one of these cars. If you're still inclined, LN Engineering has a solution.

Yea I guess i'm not quite there yet. I could pull the trigger if I wanted but my rational side says no. My limit is about $55k and I see 997.2S go for $60+

Another car i've been throwing around is the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Again - performance wise I dont think its much better than M3 but goddamn that thing is sexy!

Man I really want to - I think you've been speaking to Andrew Seifert - he's an instructor for TDE and he's a good friend of mine. I'd like to bring my car out but I put some fancy wheels on it that are not really track-friendly and I sold off my stockers like a jackass lol....

Who knows I might just come out there to hang out with you guys.

Do that!!!!!.......you can catch a ride or two and see what the M3 fuss is all about. Nothing like taking a beast back to it's stomping grounds..............Phil

To get anything that both subjectively and objectively gives a better driving experience than the M3 will cost significantly more money, new or used. The choices for my next car are the Audi R8 or 991S or 4S. Possibly an AM Vantage, but performancewise it adds nothing to the M3. Possibly a Shelby GT500 or Dodge Viper.....who knows.

Good luck moving on from the M3 !!

This is a old school problem that plagued 986 boxsters and some 996 porsches. The only 997.1 you need to worry about for the IMS failure is the 2005 997.1's. 2006 and above will be ok. My 2006 997s cab was perfectly fine and I drove the living crap out of it..

Yes, you are correct. SRT is now it's own line. FYI, they are going to be supercharging the SRT Charger, Challenger, and 300 to the tune of 570hp !!

Test drive one a few times then you will know if you really want to make the move or not. They are very different and like I mentioned before, if M3 is your only car to drive, you will appreciate it more over a 911.

Wait and Save the $5,000 then get the 997.2S. I drove both 997.1 6mt and a PDK 997.2 with sport Chrono/PASM and loved it. The 997.2 have more horse power and many other upgrades you can google. It was my first choice but wife said we needed a 4 door, hence E90 M3. No regrets.

Check out http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/997-forum-113/ To learn additonal differences between 997.1 vs 997.2. Probably the best Porsche forum out there.
