FYI I ended up going with the Blizzaks over the Continental DWS from Tire Rack. Should have them installed next week. Thanks for the suggestions.

Let's hope DC doesn't get too many blizzards this year

so when are you all swapping out to your winter setup?

Last week, we're starting to consistently get below 40 degrees in the morning and night in the city area.

i used my OEM 18's with winter tires
and i bought a set of VMR VB3s in 19" with michelin PS2s

i'd never get 255/275 for winter
it's better to have skinnier tires in the snow
i believe the recommened setup by BMW is 235/40 front and rear
i use 235 front and 265 rear

i drive my car all year. i'd hate to keep it parked in winter
i'd miss it too much

speaking of which
i think it's time to put on my winters
last few days its been late 30's in the morning
and the PS2s suck below 40 degrees

I ordered today and they are being shipped UPS ground from Delaware based on the website. They should be on the car by next week which is good because its getting around 35 degrees when I leave for work and return home.

There is no way I'm leaving this car in the garage in the winter, even if it snows heavily I can work from home

Still anxious to see how the ride feels with Blizzaks on.

I'm going to Merchant Tire this weekend to do mine.

It only costs $20 per wheel. They're also a Tire Rack installer, so i they should be able to handle TPMS and our sizes. What's our torque specs for the wheel bolts?

I tried 4-5 Tire Rack installers and all of them didn't want to install 35 series rated tires But there are a lot of installers around me finally found one after picking up the tires from the original shop.

The guy at the shop told me there was no reason to get winter tires and that I should have gone for the all-seasons oh well I'm getting the Blizzaks installed on Monday

I think our torque specs are 88-90 ft-lb for wheel bolts not sure though.

if you don't plan on driving much in heavy snow, all-seasons should be okay. I have all-seasons this year. In last year's snowfall I also used all-seasons, though I had a AWD car last year, no problems....

Winter here is pretty fair, but when it goes extreme like last year, All Seasons is pretty much useless

Do real winter performance. I tried All seasons and they lost traction at 30 degrees even without snow. Used blizzaks on my 550 and never had this kind of trouble.

I just drive my X5. If you are going to drive your M3, get a set of cheap wheels with some Blizzaks.

Good choice on the Blizzaks. The installers who told you that are full of it.

Considering the weather this weekend, I think it is finally time for me to seriously persue a winter tire or all-season. Anybody ever have experience with hancook icebears? Or any well priced snow tires for the M3 in for the 18s?

A few years ago when I was looking to buy snow tires for my S2000 I did some research on the Hankook Icebears and with the info I was able to gather I concluded they were not a very good winter/snow tire. I ended up going with the Dunlop Winter 3D (winter performance tire) and I was very happy with them. I just picked up a set of TD wheels and Dunlop 18" 3D tires for the M3.

If you want a true snow/ice winter tire then I'd highly recommend the Bridgestone WS60/70 (70 is new this year). Another great winter performance tire, if they have the sizes you are looking for, is the Bridestone LM60 which I am currently using on my Mini.

I have to disagree, all seasons, although may be ok, don't have the best rubber composition for cold weather. Even if we don't see that much snow here, temperatures do drop in the evening and it can make driving at night a bit dangerous(with black ice and all). Let's not forget that we are not driving 100hp FWD honda civics here... I mean for me traction is always an issue and I care not for having the traction control limit MY control of the vehicle. After growing up in Canada and driving in winter conditions, I think that it's important not to underplay the elements. Worst case ... your tires may not have the same adherence as your summer ones do .. although neither is the pavement warm enough to take advantage of them anyways, and since winter only lasts about 3 months, you won't be wearing them down too quick and should get a few seasons out of them!

As always, just my 2 cents. I don't mean to offend anyone!

finally? what'd you do last winter, not drive your car?

I still stick with my all-seasons, and they're fine, with traction control on, the M3 behaves pretty mildly in the snow, plus, I don't drive my car everyday or if there's more than 2 inches of snow out there. BTW I use Yokohama Advan S4.

The question is when is everyone putting their winter sets on this year?

With winter tires you typically want to go down a size so the tires tend to plow less thru the snow which increases traction and stability. Although I wouldn't run all-season tires on the M3 in winter, I'd still recommend going down a size. I believe Tire Rack recommends winter tires in the following 19" sizes: 235/35-19 and 255/35-19.

Thanks for the review on the ice bears, do you think by going down a size I will have TPS issue? Or do I need to recalibrate?

No issues with TPMS. However, if you are running TPMS on your winter setup and significantly different "winter" pressures then, yes, you'll probably have to reset TPMS. I believe the TPMS light only comes on if the tire pressures change by more than 10% or you switch to new TPMS. I don't think the new TPMS uses wheel speed sensors anymore so if the pressures are the same and the sensors are the same then I don't think you'll get a TPMS light.
