Flat plane V8 - will BMW go there?

I'm just reading about the new Mustang and found mention of a new small displacement, high revving flat plane V8 in turbo and NA form.

Very excited to see this on an affordable performance car. I hope it's really successful and BMW follows in their path.

Quote:
The first is a twin-turbocharged V-8, code-named “Voodoo,” which displaces between 5.0 and 5.5 liters and, most intriguingly, has a “flat-plane” or 180-degree crankshaft, as Ferrari has used in its V-8s since 1973. This configuration, also found in the late Lotus Esprit V-8, is akin to connecting two four-cylinder banks to a common crankshaft. Flat cranks theoretically improve power, throttle response, and the soundtrack at the expense of greater vibration. This EcoBoost V-8 will produce between 550 and 600 horses. It will power a Shelby GT350–branded model that eventually will take over from the GT500, as Ford is desperate to discontinue that car’s costly and thirsty Trinity.

The last high-performance Mustang will be a successor to the Boss 302. What will power it is still not finalized. If all goes according to plan, Ford would like to use a naturally aspirated version of the Voodoo engine. However, initial testing has not yielded the desired results in Dearborn, and it’s possible that a hotted-up version of the 5.0 Coyote could be used—as was the case in the previous Boss.

Why the hell would Ford name this new engine the "EcoBoost"? Why not something along the lines of "PantySnatcher"

With the introduction of the new I-6TT found in the M4/3, I dont see BMW planning on a cross plane V8 anytime in the near future. They had a cross plane in the GT2 E92 M3 and went back to the flat plane configuration with the new Z4 GTE. For whatever reason they chose to do this, it wouldn't be predictable for them to attempt a cross plane on a street engine, if the race engine didn't meet their expectations.

Dinan has finally made the switch from the S62 to the S65 in their race cars. It'll be interesting to see how they develop this motor in the years to come.

Nah, BMW will keep using the same I6 setup for 90% of their cars like they currently do..... the cars also almost all look the same too. BMW is officially boring.

Never thought id consider a mustang/vette/camaro over an M car, crazy world.

Except it's made by GM who has no money for new R&D and still trying to pay back the govt for bailing it out.

Where Ford owes no one anything and is making money hand over fist (plus 10 years ahead of GM with regards to engine tech).

re: bmw being boring for being consistent
I'd rather see a classic brand that's reliable than one that's trendy and unreliable.

Very true actually. Will Ford finally be getting rid of the live axles?

BMW IS boring now. There is not a single non M BMW I'd ever consider buying. If I'm going to be bored in a car, I'd rather go be bored in a Cayenne or Panamera or a Range Rover Sport or some other luxurious but boring car.

Seriously, BMW engines. i6 turbo, i4 turbo, v8 turbo. Those engines fit inside virtually every single car they make. Only the M engines are reasonably exciting.

Honestly, aside from the M5/6/Gran Coupe/M3, what BMW is thrilling to drive?

Same goes for Mercedes and Audi also. If it's not an AMG (still boring) or an R8, it is SO boring.

If my next car is not some sort of a Porsche I'm probably going down the SUV route and revisiting the Carrera when I can afford a new one in the trim I want which would be GT3/RS and higher.

Curiously the only two non-turbo cars sold by BMW in North America are the 128i and E93 M3.

Yes, their IRS on the new 2015 is a carbon copy of the E9X. It won't be shitty like GM's IRS on the Camaro and CTS

Both the gt2 M3 and z4 GTE have a flat plane.

The s65 is cross plane

Really the question should be: normally aspirated engine - will BMW go there?

thing of the past.

honestly though my mother just got a F30 335i, i kind of like the engine. I think these trubo engines are not bad for most of BMW line up with people like my mother driving them.

but the true car enthusiast is where the problems begin.

I don't want to sound the typical whine of the E9x M3 owner and claim NA is the only way to go, but these engines are not dynamic or exciting anymore. No other way I can put it.

Right. Unfortunately, BMW is doing fine by the masses and 98% of their customers are more than satisfied. More tq, more hp, less emissions, don't care about sound, etc. What more could a typical driver want. The N54 and N55 are so much more power than most of the owners of these engines could ever want or utilize.

Thats just the 4cylinder, not the 5.0L "Coyote" V8.

Pretty sure he's talking about the Voodoo engine, the rumored flat-plane optional turbo motor. There was talk of it being labeled with Ecoboost even though its a really stupid name.

Voodoo sounds much better.
