Chasing a Corvette at Road Atlanta

Everyone likes a track video! This was the MVP event at Road Atlanta this past June. I gave the blue corvette a pass at 1:13 (was full throttle at the time and they blew by ) and spent the rest of the time trying to keep the gap from growing! Also, I slid a bit into turn 10A (1:33).

Enjoy!

You need more power. What mods do you have?

I saw the DSC light come on a few times and I can't tell from the angle, did you have MDM on, or just default DSC?

yeah, I think it was coming on in most every corner. OP, DSC full ON? Might be killing your brake pads. MDM would be better but smooth out your inputs first.

It's pretty much stock. Just Pagid RS-19's, Motul brake fluid, and schroth quick fit harnesses. Just the basics to get out there

I am still a novice so I kept it on. It never used to come on, but now it is almost every corner. I guess I should back off a bit. I would like to start using MDM soon, but I wasn't going to until an instructor signed off on it first.

Sleeper519, are you going to be at the bmwcca hpde in september?

Sooner or later i'll get to DSC off! On the back straight I am touching 140 mph. I heard about the accident, but I am not sure which turn it was. It's very sad to hear about such an accident

Don't rush this! Make sure you do it in a track plenty of run off room, and also make sure you complete two warm up laps, to make sure your tires have grip, if ever you're going DSC off. Also never do DSC off in the rain. Good luk.

Nice driving. Not much run off on many of those turns looks a bit hairy. I'd keep the nannies on myself there too as a fellow novice. Regarding MDM - does that allow for quicker times with less electronic intrusion at the expense of needing lots of corrections such as maneuvers to correct oversteer, etc. Or if done right and smoothly do the more experienced guys keep it close to the edge without needing to make many corrective maneuvers? I could see putting MDM on and spinning out into a wall there.

MDM can be fast with smooth driving, almost as fast as all nannies off. With it off completely you better know what you are doing or be ready to spin .

I think you could easily run with MDM now. From DSC full ON to MDM is not such a huge jump. Full ON is just not conducive to tracking, more for street. MDM will allow small micro-slippage, which with good technique, will allow the car to do what it needs to do through the corner, but still save your bacon if you overcook it. Full ON will intervene even if it THINKS the yaw angle MIGHT come out a millimeter anytime in the foreseeable future. Having said that, the transition from MDM to DSC OFF is a bigger step, one that you might consider doing with an instructor's blessing, but a step that you should definitely work to achieve because that's when the fun really starts. Feeling what the car is actually doing in the turns and controlling it on the edge is intoxicating (and faster around the track).

Unfortunately, I'll be out of town for Sept. BMWCCA event--haven't missed one in several years--but will be instructing with Chin at RA on Sept. 26-27. Can't wait to get back out there--will have new tires as well.

I definitely will take my time getting there. Thanks for the heads up, I will remember this when that moment arrives

I remember being all over that video when it was released back in 2008. The Top Gear one, series 10 episode 10, was also a good one. It was mostly them messing around, when are they not. .

Thanks Saandiaago. To me, Road Atlanta doesn't have much room anywhere. Turn 12 is the most thrilling though !

My progression is slow and steady to MDM then DSC off, but as Sleeper519 mentioned, it is where the fun starts provided your ready . Thanks for the MDM preview! I haven't done an hpde with Chin yet. Maybe I will catch you during the March 2016 hpde

Thanks for all advice everyone. Good group here

DSC OFF in the rain is a must! you learn a lot more one day in the rain than a few days in the dry.

Depends on what runoff you have available.

Road Atlanta is an awesome track. The elevation changes there are just crazy. I've never driven it but I have visited to what the Tudor United Sportscar series...my calves were killing me after walking around the track all day.

I am using a Go Pro Hero 3+ with a cruise cam headrest mount. I actually just picked up a helmet mount and will be testing that this coming weekend at Road Atlanta again.

The next video may be helmet view!

Do you have Euro MDM coded? If not, do it. Should give you a bit more leeway to push the car on track without feeling too dangerous.
