M6 prices are down... stop me from moving over
I've always loved the M6 but didnt want to spend that much on a car. Now that the 08's are about the same price as an 08 M3 (if you find the right deal) I've been thinking about switching over. I've had my M3 for 3 years and love it, makes 0 sense financially.
Pro's: amazing V10 Sound More comfortable DD Con's: MPG SMG reliability Biggest concern is the depreciation hit that is about to come when the new M6 comes out shortly. Maybe I'll wait 2-3 years, and pick one up for ~$30k after the new one is out... Anybody have an M6 ownership experience?

I think they look great. My concerns about the M5 and M6 are post-warranty cost of ownership and MPG. They could potentially be out of my financial league, so I stayed away. If I had those sorts of finances, I would probably buy a Porsche 996 or 997 Turbo. Gives me something to look forward to in the future.

For me, I can't get over the look of the 6 series. Uuuggggllly IMO. That is obviously personal preference but I have never liked them. I wish I did because it is a great car in a lot of other ways.

The MPG part really isn't true. I got to chat with a guy in his M5 and we spoke about that and realistically the M3 is only about 1-2mpg better which IMO is not that big of a deal.

Not a fan of the looks as well. I think the M5 is better looking. I REALLY like the F10 M5.

I was looking at an E63 M6 Coupe before I bought this car and after comparing the two, i couldn't find a single thing the M6 did better than the M3. Now think about the things mentioned in this thread, like poor MPG, dated styling, higher maintenance costs, no rear seat leg room, heavier... the list goes on. Best of luck to you on your decisions. BTW, where in michigan?

having both in the driveway i like different things about both cars
+ for the M3 6MT: -feels more nimble -better styling, depends on your personal taste then again it is newer -a bit more raw driving than the 6 + for the M6 -amazing V10. -love the interior finish (leather stitched dash, suede headliner) - in my opinion more comfortable ride than the M3, then again can be due to my driving style in both cars lol if you think about buying one try to get an extended warranty and drive with peace of mind, im not a huge fan of SMG but it takes some getting used to. good luck |

A buddy of mine is an automotive journalist. I was looking at the M5/M6 and he steered me toward the M3 for three reasons:
1. reliability is better in the M3 2. DCT is far superior to the SMG III 3. M3 is more fun to drive (subjective) Basically he drove both hard on track and briskly on the streets and felt the M3 was far better. The guy has driven almost every car made in the last 10 years so I respect his opinion. He felt the M3 was one of the best cars available today in terms of a sporty daily driver.

Don't get an M6! A buddy of mine had to have his entire engine replaced or something at 30k miles and he always drove in automatic mode. It's definitely not as reliable as the M3 and the gas is the worst part. Its small tank and low MPG's will have you at gas pumps twice a week. He got rid of his M6 and bought a Jaguar XKR though. Lol.

i think it would be fun for about a couple weeks just bc of the V10 then you would be missing the M3. i almost got one too at one point bc my friend had just got his 08 M5 at the time but i really hated the SMG in it so i said i would get one in a manual then i drove the M3 and story over. i love my manual M3. it does everything well and some things amazing but nothing bad. as one member said above it is one of the best sporty daily drivers you can buy right now in my op

Handles worse than an M3.
Much faster acceleration than an M3. Ride quality is about the same. Interior fit and finish is better. I wouldn't own one w/o warranty though. I bought a new 2010 M6 last year because I wanted a full warranty plus 2010 is the only year with CIC iDrive. Sounds brutal with an exhaust. I have the RPI GT exhaust and can't get enough of the sound. My M3 also has a great sounding exhaust but this is on a different level. My M6 gets 14mpg, my M3 got 16.5mpg.
