If you have an E90 it's almost required and it really lets you hear the engine under power. For the E92s it's personal preference and a whole other debate..

I have a coupe with a moonroof and I use it everyday. The carbon fiber is cool but I rather my moon roof. It's all personal preference

I can't completely disagree with Laszlo, but I figured I enjoy the hell out of having a sunroof, and I very rarely need the extra thousandths of a second that shaving 20kg off the roof would give me. If mine were a dedicated track bar, I'd offset the weight savings tenfold anyway with a rollbar.
Personal preference. |

Plus if you plan on tracking the car. There is more headroom for you and your helmet. |

I have the coupe with the CF roof and do miss the moonroof. That is not to say I regret not having it, but I do miss it. I now do a fair amount of driving with the windows down.

i'll probably fall into this boat too (get CF and miss the sunroof). this might be lame, but i'd feel like sellout if i opted out of CF on the coupe. it is a must have for me. for the sedan i'd go with the sunroof for sure. i drive with the windows down all the time anyway, so hopefully it won't be a big difference

Take things into perspective, you won't be tracking the car more than a few times a year anyway so the other 350 some odd days you won't get to enjoy the moonroof. Can you please quote where the moonroof adds 37lb? I'm just curious to know where that figure came from. |

BMW published that the CF roof is 44lbs (if I remember correctly) lighter than the steel moonroof.....
The non sunroof cars do have more headroom....which is nice for those of us that track our M3's....

I think they eventually leak and require maintenance, all the while adding unnecessary weight in a very bad place. Plus you have to wax around them all the damn time. I have never had one myself and likely never will.

Leaks and maintenance? What's that? Keeping it clean? Not leaving it open in the rain? I agree that it's extra weight but leaks are quite uncommon. Don't spread FUD, though.

I have a moonroof on my 2 5ers and love them. Frankly, one of them did get a broken arm (probably caused by having it tilted and going over some bumpy TX back roads).
No leaks and the one that hasn't been repaired is totally quiet; little bit of wind noise over 80 mph in the other. I like my roofs and use them. If you don't use them then get the CF. I will likely opt for a 'roof when I order the E92.

Moonroof FTL.
But it comes down to opinions, I lost to another E92 M3 because it had a moonroof and the "judges" though a moonroof was more special than CF roof.

I think it is more personal preference, I never used the moonroof in my last car so I order this car with the CF roof, if I would have used the moonroof more then I would have order a moonroof.

I love my moonroof, I also get claustrophobic at times haha so it helps. I love the cf roof too but I believe that is a M6 original, not m3.

The crime here for those who don't like or want sunroofs is the rising number of vehicles that you can't get without one here in the US, anyways.
It's just extra moving parts that will require attention eventually. Get what you want and be glad it's still optional on some cars, and not mandatory. |

I doubt anyone will actually be able to feel a weight difference. I personaly don't see how anyone could go without a MR.
