PROBLEM SOLVED: pebble in the brake rotor, or so I was told. Definitely a pebble somewhere in the RR brake. Cheers to Seattle BMW for coming through...

I'm glad my diagnosis was wrong. The sound was precisely the same as my e-brake problem. But, having had stones caught in there before, I know it can generate the same sound, since both involve something hard brushing against the dust shield.

Thanks for your help. I certainly would have never guessed a pebble smaller than the avg tooth could make so much noise. Rattle free M3 makes me

Bloody Cow Bell Noise Solved

Just in case know one else has found the cure, i did yesterday.

It wasn't pebbles.

That bloody cow bell noise is the passenger break guard. I used my trusty poking device 'old billiard cue' and pushed it back away from the disc quite firmly. I found with mine in particular, it was pinging off the disc at about 5 o'clock, i.e third the way round clockwise. I got the Mrs to drive on idle, backwards and forwards in an empty quiet car park and i spotted the problem straight away.

Solved. Was driving me nuts. A new M3 that sounds like it has a knackered exhaust.

I'm confident that will solve the pain for many of you. Actually glad, so many people had the same problem and i wasn't alone as BMW were no help at all. Can't replicate..........the norm.

Yes , kind of embarrasing...mine makes the same sound from time to time, but only at low speed, never at high speed.

mine made it while car was stopped idling. low speeds cant hear anything...after i heard it, i floored it...car took off...drove fine...ill keep a watch for consistency before wasting time at the dealer and getting the "cannot reproduce error" response

There are obviously a nuumber of issues that can result in a very similar symptom of this "cow bell" type noise. My e-brake caused it, and I've had pebbles caught in the dust shield, in several cars, that resulted in a very similar noise. If you have an object caught between the shield and brake rotor, you can easily determine that by inspection. Pressing the shield away from the rotor will dislodge the object and you are fixed. If it is the same e-brake issue I had, you will find no foreign object lodged there, and the problem will not go away, but will get worse until it is almost a constant issue.

^ yes. Agreed - there appears to be a number of possible causes. Even after my dealer took out the pebble and showed it to me, the noise temporarily returned a few weeks after. I guess it's just a part of E9X life. I hope it doesn't come back again, especially at an inopportune time...

holy crap, I'm so glad I found this thread. My car started doing the same thing, and my girlfriend called me out on it :/. I seriously thought it was something more serious, but I'll poke around back there with the tips you all shared and report back with results. I love this forum!!

Can you describe where is this e-brake adjustment spring?
I took off the wheel and definitely no ROCKS. Its either the Spacers or the E-brake. Thinking more the E-brake cuz I also heard rubbing sound at high speeds, but it stopped after I pulled the e brake hard. Weird...intermittent cow bell sound at low speeds.

...took the rear (12mm) Spacers off...drove over 200 miles today and No Cowbell sound. Beginning to think it was the Spacers that was causing this... Next step will be to take the 15mm Spacers from the front and put them on the back and see if the sound comes back. Maybe it's the 12mm Spacers that's the problem???

I'm running 15/12 spacers for almost two years now and I don't have that cowbell noise you're talking about.

Had the exact same problem...did the "go fast/brake hard" technique.....no sound! It worked. *knock on wood*

It comes and goes. When it does come, I drive it really hard and it usually disappears.

I had this sound before. It is very loud when moving in low speed. After removing the wheel and brake, a small stone was found. And the noise was gone after.

Isn't this one of those things that makes our car "exclusive"?

Talk about embarrassing. I'm backing out in a parking lot after a meeting with a client yesterday and the cow bell noise starts in loud. The client hears it, gets this odd look on his face and starts running toward my car flailing both arms in the air to get me to stop. Before I know it he is on his hands and knees looking underneath my car for what I ran over. I had to sheepishly explain it was a stupid pebble in the brake shield. I recognize the comical nature of the scene, but nonetheless embarrassing.

I've had this with my e92 at least 3 times...and it was ALWAYS a stone stuck between the shield and the rotor and i was always able to jar it loose by pushing on the shield in multiple locations on both rear wheels.

It's the conical spring, held in place with a hex-head stud that goes through the e-brake shoe bracket, photo attached.

Sorry to hear that man. It's definitely embarrassing. It always seems to appear at the most inopportune times. I think we need to invent the E92 Cowbell Stopper. I would pay for that...
