2011 Space Gray Metallic Sedan

Hi,

First time posting, though I've been lurking about like many others have learning what I can about the M3 as for options and such. This will be my first BMW but I've driven a few in the past. Currently I drive a 2000 Audi S4, but have dreamed of owning an M3 since before I could legally drive.

Anyway, I looked at 2011 SGM sedan with fox red leather and the carbon leather trim - car has 10,500 miles on it, and is loaded up with the following: DCT, Comp, Premium, cold weather, M Drive, premium sound, and convenience package.

I was told by the salesman that there was a problem with the engine, and somewhere within the last 2,000 miles it was replaced. I probed for more information, and did see a service history up until approximately 8,500 miles. The salesman indicated that more information could be obtained from service regarding the engine swap, but they were closed at the time.

I would certainly look to get as much info as possible regarding the engine swap before moving forward.
The dealer is asking $62,900 - any input apprecitated on what to offer as a starting point if I choose to make an offer and info regarding other M3s getting an engine swap.

2011 with 10k miles can go for about 58k on the west coast. I've seen one for about 55k that had 14k.
I would seriously investigate the reason for the engine swap. I hope it was a manufacture defect and nothing else.
Does it come with extended warranty?

I was told it was a defect, no extended warranty. I asked about this, thinking it should if a whole new engine needed to swapped in.
Does that give me any leverage?

I'd make sure the engine is covered until 50K, or 60K miles on the whole car.

I actually asked why the engine itself didn't have its own warranty but was told it's covered for the balance of the factory one which is until 9/2015. Should I insist on a warranty for the engine that extends beyond this?

Stay away!!!!!! Do not buy the car if it's had an engine swap. Unless you are stuck on the E90, I would order a brand new E92. My 2012 was $68,000. I have every option available less performance exhaust and extended leather.

Engine swap? I would stay away if I were you.

Probably this won't help, but space gray/ fox red looks awesome IMO.

Aside from the motor issue, the car is perfect. SGM and Fox Red is a hot combination.

The problem is, they won't do any warranty deal for the motor, unless they offer you their dealer warranty... but that'll still cost you money. They'll build that into the price of the car. That could probably be an extra $2,500.

I'd walk away from this one, unless they're willing to give you the car at low at, say, 56K, and then you add a warranty in, and you're out the door for less than 60K. I wouldn't but it for any more than 60 grand with an extra warranty and paper proof of the engine swap that was a defect.

Remember, most states don't have a lemon law for used cars... so if you buy it, you're stuck with it. Unless you live in NY, NJ, or CA. I think they all have some sort of used lemon law.

Yes, leaning towards the sedan as it's just more practical for me.

To sum up, if the dealer can prove the engine was swapped due to an engine defect and is willing to offer additional warranty at a reasonable price point, should there be any reason to not move forward?

Maybe keep looking. Like others said, the west coast has lots of m3s. Or can u take a coupe? If so, just get a new one built to your specs! Yeah!

I'm in MD too. That price is too high. To put things in perspective-I paid slightly less than that amount for a brand new 2011 M3 w/all your options except Comp Pkge and Premium sound. The car was custom ordered through NW BMW in July and had it delivered via Performance Center in SC.

Don't let the engine swap scare you-as long as its a warrantied S65 engine installed by BMW..you're OK. There are some examples of brand new engine failures in this forum so...an engine swap means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Its a 2011 so you should be good for 4yrs/50,000 mile warranty/maintenance.

Thanks for your input. There's no way I'm paying $63K for this car and if/when I make an offer, I was going to start at $58K (too high?) and go from there.

To clarify your statement, 'Its a 2011 so you should be good for 4yrs/50,000 mile warranty/maintenance.', do you mean to say the balance of the original warranty, which began in September of 2011, or that I should expect to get a full 4 yr/50,000 miles warranty on the engine alone when it was installed with the balance of the original warranty for everything else?

You should have the balance of the original warranty. Anything outside of that will cost you money.
