Way to have faith in your son, thinking he'll crash in at least a year.

You know, I have an E46 323i, and it is still probably too much power for a 17 year old. I have a 17 year old and he is anxiously eyeing the E46...

He's just playing the odds. When I was 16, got my license, crashed my first brand new car within 6 months. Now before you go jumping on my back, the crash wasn't at all my fault. In fact a drunk driver made a left in front of me forcing me to T-Bone the hell out of their car. Insurance chalked it up as the other driver's fault...but it just goes to show you that not all accidents by young people are a result of the car having too much power (I was driving a POS Chevy Blazer) or the driver driving like an young idiot (doing 35mph.) Most of the time a new driver just doesn't have the experience or driving skill needed to get out of sticky situations like some of you whom have been driving for many years.....Now that I've been driving for as long as I have, and with the skills I now possess, if I was presented with the same driving situation as when I was 16 and crashed the car that I could probably wiggle out of it without hitting the other driver. But at 16....what could I do but hold on? I just wasn't educated enough...and no drivers education can make up for real world experience behind the wheel.

It might be better if you let him pick.

A car is something you spend a lot of time in, so it would make sense for it to be something of his own preference.

an e46 sounds good though.

My friend has an e46 323i sedan. I highly suggest it. It has just enough oomph to have a little fun, but it's nothing that won't get you carried away.

I would never buy my kid a BMW, Audi, or MB for his first car. Too much ego boost.

I got my first car when I was 16, and have never even been in a fender bender...

I would say something a little older, he'll appreciate his next car more. I drove a '92 Acura Legend for 2 years before I set foot in the E90 I have now.

I'm 18 with my second car, 355i coupe. I know i'm both lucky and spoiled. But I earned it

So take it from me. I have a lot of experience with these things. One question I want to ask is. Is your son a Car Addict? does he really like cars? Does he appreciate them?

My first car was a used 04 Cayenne S. My parents wanted me to look good and be SAFE. And trust me it's worth it. Im not saying get him a Cayenne S, But get him a big car or SUV.

Dont get him in a coupe or somthing like that, becuase his going to get in stupid shit, like speeding racing and other stupid things. I would get him like a new/used SUV.

You are right about him getting the car hit and stuff along those lines. So it is vital for you get him a car that he can learn in. By getting him an SUV, he will get used to diving a big car, so when he gets his second car, hopfully a bmw coupe, he will have enough experience and comfort.

But then again his your son, and I don't know him.

BTW, I would get him a used X5 with warrenty

I have bought all of my cars thus far, without money help from the parents. My first car was a 95 civic when I was 18. I then took that to my 02 Maxima, and now the BMW. I say let him pick a used car within boundaries that doesnt have too much power or ego boost. Let them learn how to drive and accept a car that they can become a skilled driver, to move onto something bigger and better in the future.

I had a 2001 E46 325i. That was a great car. I don't think that is too much power for a 17 yo old.

I highly suggest an A4 in either a 1.8T or 2.0T.... the are fun to drive, have a nice interior and are pretty slow. They are 4 wheel drive, heavy and very safe.
