I am indifferent to the M3 bumper, but I don't think it looks hideous--meaning it would not affect my purchasing decision. But that grill on the RS4 is another story. Anyway, this is all opinion...

I don't think you have to drive the M3 to the limit to experience the M-essence. I would know. I have one.

In the end, it is simply a car. A thing designed to take you from place to place. Whichever one makes you smile in the end is good enough. Price points, performance, styling, and on and on can all be debated over and over and over while we wait. There will never be an end to the pointless discussion of which one is the best. If a pumped up Passat makes you smile, great. If you think the M3 doesn't, who really gives a schitt? That is why there are Passat boards.
