Are Two E92 M3's in One Household Overkill?

Well if there's one thing I've learned in my 9 months of ownership (lease) is that the E92 M3 is a car I want to keep, dare I say, forever. However, the one thing I have missed the most is 6MT. DCT has been wonderful to me on track days, but I have been maintaining some heel-toe proficiency by punting my significant other's Mini S around.

I have been toying with the idea of ordering a 2012 model and actually purchasing it to keep. After reading threads on no-option M3s and coming to my own conclusions from driving my own car that I "think" I want to order a no-option car.

Opinions I would like to solicit are:
-Are two E92 M3's in one household overkill (she's going to take my '11)?
-How many 6MT guys track vs DCT guys who track?
-For 6MT guys that track would the prefer DCT or does driver skill make it a wash?
-I don't have any experience tracking a MT car. Given the known small issue of the 1-2 shift which shouldn't really matter on a trackday anyway. What gear changes are most common for the track day guys? My last few track days with my DCT most of my gear changes seem to be just 3-4 and 4-3 with only occasional changes up to 5th.

I don't want to make this a DCT vs 6MT thread...but I've been a MT guy my whole life and I smile whenever I drive the Mini S on the street, yet I only smile when I drive my DCT M3 on the track. If I have a 6MT M3 it'd definitely make me smile on the street but would I get frustrated on the track?

Sounds like you know what you want, nobody can tell you what you want. If you do what you want, chances are you will be happy, and that is what matters. Not what the neighbor thinks, not what the forum thinks either, and if your wife is happy, well...you know the saying.

I answer your question with another question: Are 2 pairs of tits too many?

If you can afford, why not? I have a DCT and love it as well, but do miss the MT. Only difference... I cannot afford another M3.
Good luck with your decision!

After one month of E92 M3 ownership, I have already decided I am going to add an E90 M3 to the fold as soon as this car is paid off. Both will be 6MT, however.

This doesn't help with the transmission question, but goes to show that more people than just you plan to have more than one E9X M3 in the stable...

Good Luck...

On the track you will have a blast regardless of which way you shift gears. That said the vast majority of your time together will be spent on public roads where the enjoyment you get from driving the car is paramount. No matter what happens at the track I'm thinking it won't make up for a stick guy being stuck with a DCT or vice versa. As to two M3s, if it works for you thats all that matters.

Would you consider getting an e90 or an e93 to mix it up a bit?

I can't imagine the kind of ridicule u are gonna get from frens and families. If u don't mind, sure, why not? As it is, my frens are already rolling their eyes at the idea that i am keeping my M3 after my M5 is here even tho those 2 are very different kind of cars

Why would it be overkill?

I had a Z4MC, E92 M3, and E70 X5 for like 3 weeks. Not overkill at all. On insurance maybe, but still under $200 a month for all 3 with full coverage.

I am looking for a 1 M right now too. lol So no its not even close to overkill.

Maybe an E90 sedan as the 2nd?

For me I'd love the 2nd to be a C63 wagon, guess I'd have to move to Europe for that...

There's a guy on this forum who's got two concurrent E9x M3's. He seems happy.

Sounds like two main questions:

(1) Get another 2012, to keep forever?

Hell yes!

In all seriousness, it is a large expense. If you feel comfortable, why not? I am hoping to keep my (on order) 2012 M3 forever, and I am going absolutely crazy coming to a final decision on options because I am also wanting to keep it for the long-term.

Yes, your neighbours will think you're crazy. My neighbours will definitely think we're crazy to have two BMW coupes in the driveway (335i and M3).

(2) 6MT vs DCT on this "forever E92 M3"?

Only you'll know. My opinion is that there is no perfect choice. Both have its advantages and disavantages. Get the one you'll love more. Test drive if you haven't already!

Personally, I'd get myself a Porsche in stick.

^ agree

Get a Porsche. A 911S will suffice. The new one is pretty nice too. But now you talking a little more $$$. Double that of a stripped m3

First thing that came to mind as soon as I saw the thread.

I have an 06 CS. Get a stripped down Cayman R for the track.

My uncle has two s65 amgs. He's also the only one in his household. I think it's awesome if you can afford it. Is it overkill, yes, but since when is overkill a bad thing?

I think same generation is overkill even if it's different body styles. However having different m models or different generations is a totally different thing. I will definitely add an e46 m3 and e36 m3 to the stable one day
